Kayaking Wagonga Inlet at Narooma

The crystal clear, sapphire waters of Wagonga Inlet are a pleasure to paddle with views of the town and old forest growth on the shoreline. Paddle to the upper part of the Inlet to visit the historic cemetery and see the extensive oyster farms. Landing is possible next to the pontoon. Launch from the Old Punt boat ramp next to the highway on the south side of Narooma Bridge, or take off near the cafes, restaurants and foreshore park along Riverside Drive, where you can hire a kayak. There is a barbecue/picnic area and playground available. Once you get out on the water, the possibilities are endless with such a big expanse of water. The inlet is teeming with marine life, sea birds and the occasional fur seal. Open kayaks and canoes should stay close to the water's edge, as the vast area of water can be choppy on windy days. Narooma Lighthouse Museum

Come and discover the history of Montague Island Lighthouse at the Narooma Lighthouse Museum, located at the Narooma Tourism Booking Office The key artefact of the Narooma Lighthouse Museum is the original light and optical apparatus from the Montague Island Light Station. This light station was the last in NSW to be manned and is still the only remaining occupied light station on the NSW coast. The light and optical apparatus were constructed by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, suppliers of most lighthouse equipment for colonial governments at the time. The light was first lit on 6 October 1881 and was used for almost 105 years, with its final manual lighting occurring on 14 September 1986. The light and optical apparatus were removed from Montague Island when the light was automated. A detailed interpretive display 'Mainland to Island' and a collection of items have been developed around the theme of this central piece.

Narooma and Barunguba Montague Island Heritage

Long before Narooma became the seaside town it is today, Wagonga Inlet served as a vital port, supplying the Dromedary and Nerrigundah goldfields from 1860. Sawmilling later became the region's main industry, with timber shipped to Sydney from local mills until the mid-1950s. Narooma was declared a town in 1886. Even in its early days, Narooma drew visitors with its natural beauty, superb ocean and inlet fishing, and plentiful oysters. From the 1920s, stylish guesthouses welcomed Sydney professionals alongside farmers and graziers from the west, while foreshore camping became a favourite pastime. Today, tourism remains Narooma's leading industry. History lovers can start at the old Visitor Centre building to view the original lens from Montague Lighthouse, and discover the story of Barunguba Montague Island and its light station, from Aboriginal custodianship and early settlement to maritime endeavours and fishing. Book a charter to visit the historic Barunguba Montague Island Lightstation. Walk the shoreline to Bar Rock Lookout, or follow the Mill Bay Boardwalk, where interpretive signs bring Narooma's past to life alongside a cluster of heritage-listed boatsheds. For a different perspective, cruise aboard the Wagonga Princess to hear what life was like "on the river" or catch a film at the School of Arts Hall, better known as the Kinema, one of NSW's longest-running movie theatres.

Bar Rock Lookout and Australia Rock

Bar Rock Lookout delivers a spectacular ocean outlook over the breakwalls and out to Barunguba Montague Island. Look the other way for sweeping views across Bar Beach and Wagonga Inlet, where a gorgeous palette of blues and greens stretches to the horizon. A steep staircase leads down to the start of the southern breakwall and Australia Rock, a hole in the rockface that, viewed from just the right angle, bears a striking resemblance to the Australian continent (minus Tasmania). There are plenty of theories about how the rock took its shape. Some say it's simply the work of thousands of years of erosion on the ancient chert and shale headland. One of the more intriguing tales claims the hole was created by accident when a ship was moored to the heads with large chains, which wore away the rock in heavy seas over time. Geologically, Australia Rock forms part of the Narooma Accretionary Complex and Chevron Folds, created by the immense pressure of the Pacific Plate colliding with the land. Take a stroll along the breakwall and you'll often spot fur seals sunbathing and relaxing on the rocks, making this a rewarding stop for nature lovers, photographers and curious explorers alike.

Historic Mystery Bay Velodrome

The Historic Mystery Bay Velodrome, also known as the Corunna Point or Tilba Velodrome, is a lesser-known piece of sporting history on the Eurobodalla South Coast. Dating from the 1890s, it was created by the enthusiastic Corunna Point Cycling Club on Corunna Point near Mystery Bay, jutting out into the Tasman Sea. A wonderful example of the interests of Australian communities in the late 19th century, it is believed to be one of the few surviving 19th-century cycling velodromes, and the mown grass oval track is still very evident today. Reach it by a scenic loop track from Mystery Bay, through the camping ground and on to the velodrome. Many tracks in the campground lead to vantage points with spectacular emerald green ocean views, great views of Montague Island and the interesting geology of Mystery Bay. Keep an eye out for native animals that regularly wander through the campground and national park. When you arrive, ride around the track and become part of history. There is no entry fee with limited parking. Find a beachside picnic area and additional parking at Mystery Bay Reserve.
