Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Rutherglen Wine Bottle

Standing tall since 1900, Rutherglen's historic water tower, now affectionately known as "The Wine Bottle" is a beloved local landmark with a fascinating story. Originally built to hold 72,000 gallons of water for the town, it became a backup supply after the construction of a new reservoir in 1945. In 1969 the tower took on its iconic wine bottle shape when a mesh top section was added - funded by the Rutherglen Wine Festival (now Roam Rutherglen). From a distance, the silhouette resembles a giant wine bottle, celebrating the region's rich winemaking heritage. Today, The Wine Bottle is more than just a piece of history - it's a perfect picnic or rest stop for walkers and cyclists exploring the area. From here, you can take in panoramic views of Mount Buffalo and the Chiltern Ironbark Forest, making it a peaceful and picturesque place to unwind. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a quiet spot to relax, The Wine Bottle is a must-see on your Rutherglen itinerary.

Rutherglen Silos

Visit the Rutherglen Silo Precinct in the heart of Rutherglen and see four enormous, colourful, contemporary murals by Wangaratta-based artist Ronan Holdsworth. Titled 'Birds of Seasons', these vibrant artworks celebrate the local fauna that subtly guides the rhythm of life in the region. These small, beautiful birds have historically played a vital role in signalling the changing seasons to First Nations peoples and farmers alike. Each silo in the series represents a specific season, and within their forms, intricate details reveal historic markings and stories from the local community. The first silo, depicting winter, features the Eastern Spinebill Honeyeater, paired with sprigs of Common Heath. The second silo features Billy Buttons alongside the Red Capped Robin, capturing autumn's changing landscape. The third silo features River Red Gum and the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater, embodying summer's warmth and vitality. Within the bird, delicate linework honours Rutherglen's grape harvest, featuring golden Muscat and a hidden wine glass. The fourth silo features the Pink Robin, with its vibrant belly symbolising the transition into Spring, alongside iconic Flannel Flowers. Look closely to discover golden wheat patterns and golden markings that evoke Goldrush- era maps, honouring regional history. Conveniently located in the heart of Rutherglen, the Rutherglen Silos are an accessible and captivating stop along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.

Arts Rutherglen Sculpture and Portal Trail

Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail – A Journey Through Creativity Whether you choose to walk, cycle, or drive, you'll discover a collection of remarkable sculptures dotted throughout Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, and Gooramadda. The trail began in 2008, when the local community group Arts Rutherglen set out to bring more art and culture to the region. Their annual Sculpture Exhibition, held each October and November, inspired local businesses and community members to purchase or commission works from participating artists. Over time, these pieces formed the foundation of what is now the Arts Rutherglen Sculpture Trail. Today, the trail continues to grow, with new sculptures added to celebrate creativity and enrich the region's cultural landscape. Rutherglen has truly become a vibrant destination for the arts.

Rutherglen Gold Battery

Step back in time at the Rutherglen Gold Battery, located just on the northern edge of town - an easy stroll from the centre. Built to crush quartz from nearby reefs and release the gold hidden within, the Battery is a fascinating reminder of the region's golden past. The first Government Battery was erected on Gooramadda Road in 1899. Originally a modest three-head crusher, it expanded to six heads by 1905. In just five years, it processed 110 tons of quartz and produced an impressive 628 ounces of gold. Surplus water from the nearby quartz mine powered the operation, with the Battery needing a huge 3,000 gallons to crush only 10 tons of stone. In 1908, a new Battery was constructed in its current location, this time fitted with five heads, a Wilfrey table, Bergin pan, portable steam engine and protective shed—together weighing a hefty 27 tons. After careful restoration in 2011–12, the Gold Battery is once again open for visitors. Collect an access code from the Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre to step inside, where storyboards and video displays bring to life the hard, noisy and gritty work of gold processing in the early 1900s.

Portals Into Rutherglen

Arts Rutherglen is transforming the doors and windows of Rutherglen's historic Main Street, using vibrant street art to celebrate the stories behind the town's oldest businesses. The idea grew from a simple belief: visual art can enrich the character of our town, and the history hidden behind these old shopfronts deserves to be rediscovered. From that vision, Portals into Rutherglen was created. Each artwork acts as a portal into the past, revealing the rich, varied and sometimes surprising history of the buildings that shaped Rutherglen's commercial heart. While the project looks back in time, Arts Rutherglen is also embracing the future. Visitors can use QR codes placed alongside the artworks to explore deeper stories, images, and historical insights right from their mobile phones. Portals into Rutherglen invites locals and visitors alike to wander, look closer and reconnect with the heritage woven into Main Street. There are currently six portals you can visit: Portal 1: Aitken and Fullerton Grocers Portal 2: Red Boot Shop Portal 3: Mothers Little Helpers Portal 4: Kit and Kaboodle Portal 5: Symbols of Practice Portal 6: A Splash of Summer and Bill's Bench
