Rosebery Silo Art

Before working in Rosebery, Melbourne artist Kaff-eine spent time in the Mallee helping fellow artist Rone on his Lascelles silo project. During this time, she visited nearby towns, exploring the natural environment and connecting with locals to develop a concept for the 1939 GrainCorp silos. Completed in late 2017, Kaff-eine’s artwork reflects the region’s past, present, and future. The left silo represents the strength and resilience of young female farmers facing drought, fires, and hardships. Depicted in a work shirt, jeans, and turned-down cowboy boots, the female sheep farmer symbolises the future of the Mallee. The right silo captures a quiet moment between friends, featuring a contemporary horseman in an Akubra hat, Bogs boots, and an oilskin vest. Both man and horse appear relaxed and connected, symbolising trust and mutual respect. Kaff-eine's street art career began later in life. Formerly a lawyer and public servant, she switched to full-time street art in 2012, selling her house and leaving her government career behind. Now internationally renowned, her work blends creativity with social consciousness, often engaging with social and political issues. Her art, ranging from photorealistic to darkly sensual stylised characters, is "loaded with symbolism and narrative."

Brim Silo Art

Guido van Helten’s iconic Brim mural was the first silo artwork to appear in Victoria, and infused the community with newfound energy and optimism. After gaining widespread local and international attention, Brim’s silo art success shone a spotlight on the Wimmera Mallee region and inspired the establishment of the Silo Art Trail. Completed in early 2016, with limited financial resources, van Helten’s mural depicts an anonymous, multi-generational quartet of female and male farmers. Rendered across these four 1939-built GrainCorp silos, van Helten’s subjects bear expressions that exemplify the strength and resilience of the local farming community. The work explores shifting notions of community identity when rural populations face immense economic pressure and tangible consequences of climate change. Using the documentary style of humanist street photography as studies, the translucent aerosol technique conjures a sense of ghostliness. The resulting characters are profoundly connected to their chosen place, infusing the landscape with a comforting, familiar presence. Van Helten was born in Canberra and grew up in Melbourne. Celebrating everyday characters, his monochromatic, photorealistic style offers a glimpse into the lives of others. His murals tell stories of culture, history and identity in an effort to capture the soul of people and place.

Rainbow Silo Art

Taking the Silo Art Trail to the next level (28 metres to be exact), the Rainbow Silo incorporates a lookout tower and internal artwork within the silo which is accessible via an elevator and/or staircase. View the fantastic external artwork by Geoffrey Carran from various heights as you make your way up the tower inspired by a Euphorbia Trigona cactus from neighbouring Llew Schilling's garden and a Mallee Emu Wren endemic to the local region. The mesmerising internal silo art by Collide Public Art (lead artist James Voller) incorporates lighting and imagery inspired by the flowers in Llew's garden hanging in the immense silo space. This can be viewed from two viewpoints. The lower walking platform at eight metres gives access to the artwork before continuing on to the second silo bin giving a unique view of the inside of a grain silo unimpacted by artwork installation. At the 28 metre level the stair and elevator exit to a large viewing platform giving expansive views across Rainbow and the southern Wimmera Mallee before leading into a top viewing point of the internal silo art. Lascelles Silo Art

To capture the true essence of Lascelles, Melbourne-based artist, Rone knew that he had to learn about those who were deeply connected to it. Here, he depicts local farming couple Geoff and Merrilyn Horman, part of a family that has lived and farmed in the area for four generations. Rone says that he wanted the mural to portray his subjects as wise and knowing, nurturing the town’s future with their vast farming experience and longstanding connection to the area. In mid 2017 Rone worked for two weeks to transform the two 1939-built GrainCorp silos. He went to great lengths to paint in the silo’s existing raw concrete tones to produce a work that would integrate sensitively into its environment. Utilising this muted monochrome palette, he added water to his paint as a blending tool to produce a ghostly, transparent effect – a signature of his distinctive painting style. The Artist: Born in Geelong, Victoria, Rone studied graphic art in Melbourne but fell deeply in love with the art that he saw on the streets. While his early work involved small stencils and posters, he later graduated to freehand painting and large-scale mural work. A seminal figure in Australia’s early street art scene, Rone is perhaps best known for his large-scale "Jane Doe” portraits, which feature beautiful young women painted onto old, decaying backgrounds.

Albacutya Silo Art

2021 addition to the Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail, Albacutya Silo is nine kilometres north of Rainbow in North West Victoria. Melbourne artist Kitt Bennett was inspired to create an artwork that tells the story of growing up in the country as a youth. Kitt has fond memories of exploring the bush and looking for yabbies under rocks in creeks with their parents. Reflecting on this weird and wonderful time as an adult is something that brings a lot of happiness.' Kitt wanted to keep the artwork somewhat surreal and distorted from reality. Much like the nature of stories from the past. They often become exaggerated. Wanting to make this painting very bright and full of colour in an attempt to reflect the rainbow theme and to separate it from its environment. The Silo itself is old but the artwork aims to breathe a new life into the landscape.

Jeparit Heritage Walk

Take this self guided town walk to explore the history of Jeparit. Jeparit was surveyed in 1883 and gazetted on the 13th of July, 1903. The post office opened on 31 August, 1889, and the town was known as Lake Hindmarsh until December of that year. Two earlier post offices called Lake Hindmarsh had existed in the area at various times since 1861 to serve a smaller population of graziers. The area around Jeparit had been home to the Gromiluk Aborigines prior to European settlement. The name Jeparit is believed to be derived from a Gromiluk word meaning home of small birds. European settlement began in the 1880s when German Lutheran immigrants began to settle and grow wheat. The town is the birthplace of Australia's legendary Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies. He was Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, 1939-1941 and 1949-1966, keeping the top job for over 18 years. In honour of Sir Robert Menzies, his achievements and political success, Jeparit has erected a spire, a town square, and a plaque. Information about the sites can be found on plaques along the walk, with further information found via the Visit Hindmarsh website.
