Captains Flat Heritage Walk

Captains Flat is a quaint little village nestled on the Molonglo River, on the edge of the Great Dividing Range. The origin of name is said to come from a bull named Captain who was known to graze on the flat grassy paddocks near the Molonglo River. Take this stroll around the village to explore its many historic buildings, such as the old hospital, former post office and Captains Flat Hotel, as well as attractions like the Lake George Mine entrance and the Miners’ Memorial. Drive up the old mine road behind Captain Flat Hotel to get to the town lookout with breathtaking views across the township and the old mining site. Among the many places worth exploring are the historic Police Station and Court House (1896) with the crest of Queen Victoria; Wilkins Park (beside the Molonglo River) - named after Bert Wilkins, the Mine Operations Manager, it has an historic water trough as well as good picnic facilities; and the Captains Flat Hotel (1938) which, when it opened, boasted the longest bar (over 30 metres) in Australia.

Yanununbeyan State Conservation Area

If you're after a bit of isolation and a lot of peace and solitude, Yanununbeyan State Conservation Area is just the place to visit. You can be as active or as passive as you wish. Yanununbeyan is part of the traditional country of the Ngarigo people and was settled by European graziers as early as the 1820s. Today, remnants of Aboriginal heritage and colonial history can be seen as you explore the park's various routes either by horse riding, cycling or walking. Birdwatchers will have a field day in Yanununbeyan, where a huge number of different species make their home. Bring your binoculars and look out for wedge-tailed eagles, spotted quail thrush, superb lyrebirds, dusky wood swallows, speckled warblers and diamond firetails as you set out on your birdwatching expedition of the park. You'll hear approaching gang gang cockatoos and yellow-tailed black cockatoos from miles away.

Apple Box Flat picnic area

Apple Box Flat picnic area, in Yanununbeyan State Conservation Area, allows you to enjoy a totally natural environment without having to travel very far from civilisation. Bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it or stock up at the bakery of a nearby town and roll out the thermos for a break from the highway Apple Box Flat picnic area is situated in an open grassy clearing surrounded by eucalypts such as black sallee, scribbly gum, peppermint, brittle gum and, of course, apple box. In fact, there’s a particularly old and unusually large apple box at the picnic area. Apparently, apple box honey is sensational. From your picnic area, there’s a whole park to explore if you have the time and energy.  Queanbeyan River is a short walk through the bush and there are plenty of fire trails to follow. Take along your binoculars for birdwatching and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way.

The Big Hole walking track

Natural Attractions

The Big Hole walking track

In 1862, a young man called Boxall used four long saplings, a rope and a candle to explore a deep chasm out in the bushland of southeast NSW. The rubbly bottom he eventually landed on was 96 metres from the surface. Onlookers were all shaking their heads at his reckless behaviour but also itching to know what he’d found down there inside what is now known as The Big Hole. Thought to be around 400 million years in the making, this is an extraordinary limestone marvel; a roofless cave which is over 100 metres deep and 50 metres wide. It can be reached by walking from Berlang campground, wading across Shoalhaven River, then continuing through dry eucalypt forest and unique nana heath, with expansive views of the park on your journey. The vast open chasm can be viewed from the lookout and, if you’re there in the early morning or late afternoon, you may see its resident lyrebird come out from its ferny grotto to feed.
