Island Sanctuary

The Island Sanctuary is a natural bushland reserve formed by the Edward River. Grassy areas and picnic tables make it ideal for families and visitors. The sanctuary is pet friendly, but dogs must stay on a leash to protect wildlife. Flora and Fauna The reserve is home to a variety of native animals, including red and grey kangaroos, black wallabies, echidnas, lizards, tortoises, and snakes. More than 100 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary. Waterbirds are common throughout the year. During floods, large numbers of Nankeen Night Herons and Intermediate Egrets nest within the reserve. River Red Gums dominate the landscape, alongside a small number of Black Box trees. Acacia dealbata is the only wattle species found on the island. Floodwaters help distribute seeds, supporting new growth throughout the reserve. River Couch and Kikuyu are the most common grasses. Folklore The sanctuary contains the burial site of "Old Jack", a member of the notorious Melville Gang. In 1851, Old Jack suffered fatal burns during a tragic accident in Deniliquin. He later received a bushman's burial near Tarangle Creek, beneath what became known as Jack's Tree. Cultural Tours Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre offers guided tours of the sanctuary. Visitors can learn about traditional plant uses and view a scarred tree. Contact Yarkuwa on 03 5881 3312.

Mountain Bike Trails - Deniliquin

Murray Valley Regional Park is well known by mountain bikers for its fast and flowing cross-country routes through stunning forests. Expect lots of turns and log rollovers – it's mostly flat terrain with some gentle hills and one steep descent. Choose from three loop trails: 7.6 kilometre or 11 kilometre or 12 kilometre. The trail network is structured around the existing kangaroo tracks found in the forest, so it has a minimal environmental impact. These trails are rated as intermediate but are suitable for most riders. It takes about two hours to complete the full 12 kilometre loop. No wheels? No worries, drop by the Visitor Information Centre in George Street to hire a mountain bike. It's free to hire – just call ahead to make sure bikes are available.

McFaull Park in Civic Place has been developed into an open-air classroom to help people learn about the value of the wetlands, with interpretive signs so you can enjoy a self-navigable wetland walk. Look out for native fish, including the endangered Southern Pygmy Perch, in the lagoons as well as a colourful array of birdlife including ducks, speckled geese, shags and pied cormorants. You might even spot a rare species such as the Australian Reed Warbler. The refuge in the centre of the lagoon is where the birds sit, rest and dry their wings. Every day they can be seen from the bird hide on the island. You'll probably also see some water rats which love eating yabbies and small fish, and turtles which use the refuge for sunning and resting. McFaull Park is also the site for the re-opened Skate Park. Following funding from the NSW State Government, the Skate Park has been re-built to include additional features for people of al skating ability to enjoy.

Deniliquin Golf Club

Situated on the edge of the Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the town centre, the Deniliquin Golf Club boasts one of the nation’s most natural and beautiful courses. With 18 carefully manicured fairways meandering around the waterways and forest, Deniliquin Golf Club is a mecca for native birds and wildlife. The club also offers a 'same day play' which is rare among the Murray courses. The course itself is a par 72, comprising five par threes, five par fives and eight par fours. The front nine is shorter, though lots of water hazards require precision placement. The more open back nine allows you to open up with the driver, but beware the creeks and trees if you're too far off line. The course is not long by today's standards - 5848 metres for men and 5118 metres for ladies - but challenges the accuracy of all players. Good shots are rewarded, but those who stray can find huge trees which line their fairways, Aljoes Creek which splits the course or one of the many water holes. The greens are fast but true and kept in magnificent condition throughout the year.

The Three Muses

The three statues, sculpted from drawings by architect Louis Harrison, represent the philosophies of Literature, Art and Science. Created by Ferrari Bros in Italy from Carrara marble they were originally located on a parapet at the front of Deniliquin's School of Arts in End Street. When the School of Arts closed in 1943, the building was acquired by Deniliquin Council and housed the Regional Library from 1946 to 1967, which was the first regional library in Australia. Following cracks appearing in 1950, the statues were removed and eventually restored and relocated to the Waring Gardens.

Whether you're feeding the ducks by the lagoon, relaxing under the shade of a giant Moreton Bay fig, or watching the kids enjoy the enclosed playground, it's the perfect spot for a picnic. Directly opposite one of Deni's best shopping strips, the gardens are both a scenic retreat and a cultural landmark. The site features the cenotaph and Vietnam Veterans memorial, honouring local service members' contributions. Established in 1888 and named after Deniliquin's first Town Clerk, John Waring, the gardens began as a botanic testing ground for trees and shrubs suited to the local climate. Historic features like the band rotunda and creeper-covered fountain rotunda (erected in 1891) add to the charm. A footbridge enhances the scenic lagoon system that weaves through the town centre, and on the corner of Edwardes & Cressy Streets, you'll find the Three Muses—marble sculptures representing Art, Science, and Literature, originally crafted in Italy and restored in 1997. Our River Sculpture

Our River by Rachel Braybon is an adaption of the logo from the Yarkuwa Rangers, designed by Liticia Ross to represent the role of Rangers caring for Country to maintain the local river system, and to preserve the knowledge of the riverine environment for the benefit of the broader community. The three waves represent the sky, land and water on the Kolety Werkul River System where the Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa people have always lived. The sky – The Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa people look to the sky, the first wave, to tell stories with the stars and to identify changes in weather. The land – The middle wave is the home, the connection to sky and river. The river – The third wave is the lifeline, song lines and food source. It is life itself.

Blake Botanic Reserve

Blake Botanic Reserve is part of a natural lagoon system, a distinctive feature of Deniliquin, which meanders through the township. The lagoons eventually flow into the Edward River (Kolety), an anabranch of the Murray River (Dhungala). In 1985 local residents together with the Southern Riverina Field Naturalists through the leadership of the then president, Graham Harrington, and Deniliquin Municipal Council commenced work revegetating the site with local native plant species. The project sought to create examples of the different plant community types found in the southern Riverina to provide an educational experience for locals and tourists alike. The Reserve is comprised of various basic soil types and associated vegetation which support beneficial birds and insects. They are River Red Gum; White Cypress Pine; Grey Box; Black Box; Boree and Saltbush. More recently the site has been used to showcase traditional First Nations Scar Trees practices.
