Henty Man

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

The Henty Man

Located between the towns of Henty and Culcairn on the Olympic Highway, is the Henty Man. This man was originally shaped by an itinerant worker in the early 1930s from a tree burnt out by a swagman's fire. It became a district landmark until it was destroyed by natural elements about 20 years later. Before Henty's Centenary in 1986, it was decided by local identities to restore 'The Man' for that occasion, and this was done with the help of the former Culcairn Shire Council. At the Centenary celebrations, Councillor Hugh McKay dedicated it to the men of the road, who had to walk the length and breadth of Australia during the Great Depression seeking work. The Henty Man is a rest area with picnic tables, refuse bins and toilets.

Henty Golf Course

Improvements have been made to the course, with three bridges built to facilitate the movement of golf carts. The club was presented with two powered golf carts by the NSW Golf Foundation in 2006. A heavier bridge was built over the dam to allow the tractor to cross. The big change to the course has been the sale of 7.33 acres of the north-western corner to Vitality Life for the Sweetwater Retirement Village. The sale forced the relocation of the seventh green, the work done with a working bee and six trucks bringing in fill to build up the green. The 10th, 17th and 18th fairways vanished and had to be incorporated within the rest of the course with some of the holes being shortened and others lengthened. The 18 hole sand green golf course is regarded as being one of the best in terms of being very well maintained. The season runs from April through to September. New members and visitors are always welcome.

Yerong Creek Water Tower Mural

The beautiful and bright Yerong Creek Water Tower Mural dominates the skyline and provides the perfect canvas to highlight the story of local life and history through the eyes of children, connecting the past, present and future. In many of the elements, the children are wearing white and blue coloured clothing representing the colours of the Yerong Creek Community. The story of 'Through Their Eyes' aims to celebrate life in and around this rural village, depicting the cultural and social fabric. The mural features six main elements: Agriculture, Education, Indigenous Culture, Military, Sport and Transport. Each element is further explored around the base of the Water Tower. The Mural was designed by world famous Melbourne-based artist Khosnaran Khurelbaatar (Heesco) who applied more than 140 litres of undercoat paint and used over 200 cans of spray paint covering the area of 836 square metres to complete his first water tower mural. The Yerong Creek Water Tower Mural is the third water tower mural to be painted in Lockhart Shire with the Milbrulong Water Tower Mural completed in 2020 and the Lockhart Water Tower Mural completed in 2018.

John McLeans Memorial

Visitors to Culcairn are able to see the memorial site of John McLean, one of two local victims of the infamous bushranger, Dan Morgan. 'Mad Dan' Morgan was one of the most unpleasant bushrangers of his time. Morgan operated in the Henty, Culcairn, Morven, Gerogery and Tumbarumba areas over several years, and was remembered for the notorious murder of a local man, John McLean. McLean fell victim to Mad Dan in 1864 when Morgan 'visited' Round Hill Station. Morgan confronted Mrs Watson, the wife of the manager, demanding food. A gunfight between Morgan ensued and McLean was fatally wounded. The memorial of John McLean can be found on the Culcairn Holbrook Road, a minutes drive from Culcairn. Visitors interested in the notorious legend of Mad Dan can also visit other landmarks including the memorial of Sergeant Smyth in Henty and Morgan's Lookout, the hideout he used to evade police.
