Christ Church Yankalilla

Christ Church Yankalilla was established in 1857 and is one of the earliest Anglican churches in South Australia. Containing many beautiful stained-glass windows of historical significance, it provides a quiet ambience for prayer and meditation. It is the only church in the region which is open every day. Significant works of art by Barbara Robertson and Pro Hart are on display in the church. The centre of worship for the Christ Church congregation is the 9.30am sung Eucharist (Holy Communion) every Sunday, using the Prayer Book for Australia service. On August 24, 1994, a parishioner saw what appeared to be an image of the Virgin Mary high on the back wall of the church. After two years, the "apparition" was acknowledged, and a wrought iron frame was placed around it. This attracted attention from around the world, bringing many pilgrims to the small town.

The Salty Finn Sauna - Summer

The Salty Finn Sauna brings the Finnish sauna ritual to the Normanville Foreshore for the summer season. Handcrafted and heated by wood fire, South Australia's first mobile beach sauna sits just steps from the sand. Guests move between the deep warmth of the sauna and the calm, clear waters of Gulf St Vincent. The experience is rooted in slow living, ritual and human connection. Guests settle into the soft heat of the fire and pour water over the hot stones to release a wave of steam. Then they wander down to the shoreline to cool off before returning to the warmth. This cycle of hot and cold has been at the heart of Finnish culture for centuries. Each communal session welcomes a small group of up to six guests. A trained Sauna Host guides every session, shares the traditions of the ritual and makes first-timers feel at ease. Private bookings are also available for friends, families, celebrations and small groups. Normanville's west-facing beach is known for long summer evenings and golden sunsets over the gulf, so late-day sessions are a highlight of the season. The foreshore is an easy drive south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Bookings and sauna etiquette are available via The Salty Finn Sauna website.

Normanville and Carrickalinga beaches are relatively safe under normal conditions. Best access and facilities are located at Normanville and Carrickalinga. The best shore fishing is from the Normanville Jetty and Haycock Point. Most fishers head out into the gulf in small boats, which can be launched from the beach at Normanville but please check beach and marine condition before attempting to launch. HMAS Hobart Lookout

The 'HMAS Hobart Memorial' Lookout is located a few kilometres along Main South Road (via Willis Drive) from the township of Normanville. Registered on the national Australian War Memorial register "Places of Pride' and maintained by the District Council of Yankalilla as a roadside-reserve, 10's of thousands of visitors each year take in the magnificent coastal vista that some who have visited Gallipoli say this part of the Fleurieu panoramic Coastline much resembles. Of special significance is the Ship's Anchor of HMAS Hobart DDG 39 (HMAS Hobart II) which lays at the Memorial site pointing towards the resting-place of the Destroyer, ceremoniously scuttled at sea, distance 6.0n.m (11.5km) on 5th November 2002 and now forming an internationally recognized premier Eco-dive site and fish abundant reef. Myponga Beach

Myponga Beach occupies a small valley that has been carved by Myponga Creek and is now partially filled with river and marine sediments forming a flat plain occupied by a few houses and an elongated lagoon and wetland that flows across the southern end of the beach. Houses and shacks line the rear of the beach; so much so a seawall has been built to protect some of the properties. Fifty-metre-high grassy bluffs border each end of this 400 metre long unpatrolled beach, with rocks and reefs extending seaward. It is moderately steep and fronted by a narrow continuous bar, with waves averaging about 0.5 metres. The beach was used as a port and the ruins of the old jetty are still present. Swimming is relatively safe in the sandy central portion of the beach, and it is a popular spot for both launching boats and for shore-based fishing off the adjacent rock reefs.

ex HMAS Hobart Dive Site

On 5 November 2002 the ex HMAS Hobart was scuttled in Yankalilla Bay to form an artificial dive reef. The Hobart's final resting place lies four nautical miles west northwest of Marina St Vincent. Of the three naval vessels that have been scuttled in Australia, the Hobart is currently the most intact with 90,000 square metres of the ship open to diver access including access to the engine room, missile launcher, gun turrets and both funnels. The Hobart was nicknamed the 'Green Ghost' for her reputation as a quiet vessel during three tours of duty of Vietnam. The Hobart was the most decorated naval vessel of her era and we are proud that her final resting place is in Yankalilla Bay. As a premier dive attraction, her memory and that of the people who serve on her will live on. A land-based memorial has been established at Lady Bay where the anchor from the ship lies pointing in the direction of the wreck. It's Australia's most accessible and exciting wreck, scuttled off Wirrina Cove. You need to be with a licensed operator to dive the ex HMAS Hobart. Visit the website for permit information.

Glacier Rock

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Glacier Rock

Glacier Rock is a ~280 million year old Glacial Pavement carved into 510 million year old bedrock, exposed in the Inman River bed below the cafe. Also known as Selwyn's Rock, it's the largest of several glacial pavements created on the Fleurieu Peninsula by the Permian Ice Age. It's also one of the largest exposed glacial pavements in the world. The grooves, scratches and other glacial marks on the rock surface show that the icecap moved from southeast to northwest here. The riverbank above Glacier Rock contains boulders and other rock debris dumped by the melting icecap, including granites from Victor Harbor. The first European recording of Glacier Rock was in 1859 by ARC Selwyn, a geologist working for the colonial South Australian Government. It was the first recorded discovery of glaciations in Australia by European scientists. It was then rediscovered in 1897 by famous geologists Sir David Edgeworth and Dr Walter Howchin, from Sydney and Adelaide Universities. Glacier Rock is a designated Geological Monument that attracts geologists from all over the world.
