Natural Attractions

Silver Sands Beach

Silver Sands is one of the Fleurieu Peninsula's best-known drive-on beaches, just south of Aldinga and around 45 minutes from Adelaide. Its long, west-facing stretch of sand makes it easy to settle in for a full beach day, with vehicle access available in designated areas subject to local conditions and regulations. The relatively shallow nearshore waters are popular for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking, while fishing from the beach is another local favourite. There is plenty of room for long walks along the shoreline, and the west-facing position means Silver Sands is also a good spot to stay into the late afternoon. Dogs are permitted in designated areas, subject to current council regulations, so check requirements before visiting. Drivers should also follow beach access signage, speed limits, tides and any seasonal restrictions. With Aldinga Beach nearby and the McLaren Vale wine region just inland, Silver Sands is an easy addition to a wider Fleurieu day — beach first, then food, wine or a stop in town afterwards.

Port Willunga Beach

Natural Attractions

Port Willunga Beach

Port Willunga Beach is one the region's most photographed beaches featuring the remains of the Port Willunga Jetty. Located approximately 35kms south of Adelaide, the beach is famous for its golden cliff faces, crystal clear waters and soft white sands - the type that squeaks between your toes. It is an ideal spot for those long beach walks on the wet sand, with only the sound of waves lapping at your feet. Nestled on the edge of the cliff top is the Star of Greece restaurant, offering stunning views along the coast and named after a nearby shipwreck. Sections of the hull of the Star of Greece, which sank in 1888, remain on the sea floor and makes for a popular diving spot. At low tide parts of the wreck may still be visible from the shore. Port Willunga Beach also forms part of Route 31 Coastal Drive, which stretches from O'Sullivan Beach to Sellicks Beach along 31kms of pristine coastline (hence its name Route 31). To experience the drive, and discover the great places to stop, explore and wander grab a map by dropping into the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre or download it from the website.

Natural Attractions

Myponga Beach

Myponga Beach occupies a small valley that has been carved by Myponga Creek and is now partially filled with river and marine sediments forming a flat plain occupied by a few houses and an elongated lagoon and wetland that flows across the southern end of the beach. Houses and shacks line the rear of the beach; so much so a seawall has been built to protect some of the properties. Fifty-metre-high grassy bluffs border each end of this 400 metre long unpatrolled beach, with rocks and reefs extending seaward. It is moderately steep and fronted by a narrow continuous bar, with waves averaging about 0.5 metres. The beach was used as a port and the ruins of the old jetty are still present. Swimming is relatively safe in the sandy central portion of the beach, and it is a popular spot for both launching boats and for shore-based fishing off the adjacent rock reefs.

McLaren Vale Cellar Door Tree Trail

There are many reasons why the world need trees, the biggest plants on our planet. Trees give oxygen and they absorb carbon dioxide and gases that could be harmful. Trees can also lower temperatures by providing shade and they can reduce soil erosion. As well as all the ways they benefit us, trees also provide food and habitat for wildlife, including birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. To celebrate trees and their importance in the region and the wine industry, Maclaren Vake has created a unique McLaren Vale tree trail where you will find interesting information on a variety of trees. So come and have a look at some of the 54 beautiful trees that compose the tree trails at participating Cellar Doors with more to be announced soon!

Moana Sands Conservation Park

Moana Sands Conservation Park is a significant Aboriginal cultural heritage site. The park's coastal sand dunes are very important in the cultural traditions of the Kaurna people who made their summer camp in the dunes next to Pedlar Creek. Many archaeological artefacts, including burial sites, hearths and shell middens - some dating back more than 6000 years - have been found where the overlying sand has blown away. Although a long history of sand mining, farming and recreational activities has impacted on the landscape and native vegetation of the park, you can still enjoy opportunities to observe the reptiles and birdlife that call the low coastal vegetation their home. Look out for painted dragons, skinks, honeyeaters, brown goshawks, dotterels and the rare hooded plover.
