Tailem Bend Historic Rail Trail - the railway station

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Tailem Bend Historic Rail Trail

This is a fully mapped and marked trail around Tailem Bend, it notes the historic significance of landmarks and buildings with interpretive signage. It's theme is 'rail', as the town was built and grew around the railways. The unique and quirky part of this trail is that the community members are the story-tellers themselves. In developing the trail, interviews were held with elderly residents and current owners of the buildings to help mark the town's history. This trail, and its interpretive signage, features stories, photos and information that cannot be found in traditional forms. People can walk, cycle or drive the Tailem Bend Historic Rail Trail, and the map offers numbers and advice on the order to traverse it. It includes places such as 'wurtun', the first row of railway cottages, the railways institute and so on... You can download the map online or you can pick up a copy from the Coorong Civic Centre, Tailem Bend Community Centre, Tailem Info Station and Railway Museum, or Tailem Bend Community Library. Pangarinda Botanic Garden

Pangarinda Botanic Garden is a vital link in Australia's effort to conserve threatened native flora. Carefully maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, the garden has flourished into a diverse showcase of Australian plant life. Winter is an especially spectacular time to visit, with one of the region's largest collections of hakeas bursting into colourful bloom. Visitors can follow the marked walking trail, beginning at the information bay and winding through an impressive selection of Western Australian species before entering the Olympic 2000 plantings of local vegetation. Tailem Bend School students worked alongside volunteers in 2000 to re‑establish the area, transforming what was then a weed‑covered site into thriving habitat. Today, the trail leads through rich bushland alive with birdlife. Look for quails darting between shrubs, noisy babblers flying low across branches, and the sharp alarm calls of New Holland Honeyeaters when raptors pass overhead. In May, seasonal visitors such as robins hopping along fence lines and golden whistlers calling from the acacias add to the garden's natural charm. With one of the finest regional collections of Australian plants, Pangarinda Botanic Garden offers a peaceful, educational and beautifully maintained space for nature lovers to explore.

Swanport Wetlands

Swanport Wetlands is a recreation reserve under the control of the Rural City of Murray Bridge. It covers an area of 19.4 hectares including 3.5 hectares of open water within a wetland of 13.6 hectares. The wetland is essentially one lagoon, which has been bisected by a causeway. This causeway has altered the natural flow patterns of the wetland and now forms part of the wetlands as you see it today. Flow patterns are very important to wetlands as the cycles of wetting, drying and flooding produce a range of conditions for the regeneration and breeding of plants and animals. The wetland is an area of reed beds, lignum, samphire and Red gum trees. These are important habitats for fauna. A considerable amount of work has been carried out to enhance your visit to the wetlands area including buffer zone revegetation, construction of raised walkways and bird watching hides.

Bertha the Bunyip

The Mulyawonk (Bunyip) Mulyawonk (pronounced Mool-ya-wonk) To the Ngarrindjeri people the Bunyip is known as the Mulyawonk. Whilst Mulyawonk Dreaming may vary from Lakalinyeri (clan) to Lakalinyeri, Ngarrindjeri Mulyawonk Dreaming in part says In times long ago there lived a Ngarrindjeri Ko:ni (man) who was greedy catching far too many fish than he needed. The Elders were not happy with this selfish man who did not respect the Ngarrindjeri laws of fishing. The Elders were so angry with this man that as a punishment they turned him into the Mulyawonk - a half fish, half man creature and banishing him to the river forever. Ngarrindjeri children are told never to swim alone or to take more fish than you can eat from the river and lakes. If you do swim alone or are greedy in taking too many fish, then the Mulyawonk will get you. This story teaches children water safety and respect for the fishes of the River and Lakes. One home of the Mulyawonk is in a river cave at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge. Viewing is free, simply push the button and The Bunyip will raise from the depths of its cave, booming forth it's loud ferocious roar.
