Australian War Memorial

Discover, reflect, and remember those who have served our nation by immersing yourself in stories that share Australia's collective history. The Australian War Memorial is a unique national institution that combines a shrine, a museum, and an archive. It is dedicated to telling the stories of the men and women who have served the nation in war, conflict, and peacekeeping operations, both at home and abroad. Through a diverse collection of exhibitions, artworks, large technology objects, and personal records, the Memorial plays an important role in shaping how Australia's history and national identity are understood by Australians and international visitors alike. The daily Last Post Ceremony invites visitors to honour one of the more than 103,000 individuals listed on the Roll of Honour who died as a result of their service. This moving tribute shares their personal story and provides a quiet moment of reflection and acknowledgment of their sacrifice. A range of guided tours and self-guided tours, including free daily tours which go for 80 minutes, are on offer to help visitors make the most out of their visit. The Australian War Memorial is the recipient of multiple tourism awards and recognitions, including ranking as the number one attraction in Canberra on Tripadvisor and listed by Casago as one of the top 10 free tourist attractions in the world for 2023.

Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial

The Memorial farewells visitors with its moving Last Post Ceremony in the Commemorative Courtyard. The ceremony begins with the Australian national anthem followed by the piper's lament. Visitors are invited to lay wreaths and floral tributes beside the Pool of Reflection. Each night the ceremony shares the story behind one of the names on the Roll of Honour, and the Ode is recited by Australian Defence Force personnel. The ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post. From February to November the Last Post Ceremony includes Australia's Federation Guard (on the first and third Wednesday of each month). All of the daily Last Post Ceremonies are streamed live on the Australian War Memorial YouTube channel. Please visit the website for more information.

St John's Anglican Church Canberra

St John's Anglican Church Canberra

St John's is a Canberra treasure – a sanctuary in the heart of Australia's capital. Canberra's oldest church was consecrated in 1845, almost 70 years before the capital was founded. When you visit, you will walk in the footsteps of pioneering farming families, leaders, service personnel, scientists and scholars. Join the local community at a Sunday service supported by the powerful pipe organ, choir or band. Listen out for the glorious ringing of the tower bells. Find peace with the church's ambience, historic memorials and intricate architecture. Marvel at the 12th century stone from Canterbury Cathedral, originally intended to be the foundation stone of the National Anglican Cathedral. Admire the beautiful stained glass windows, including the magnificent East Window depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist, after whom the church is dedicated. Sit in the front pew where Queen Elizabeth II sat on her four visits to St John's and visit the tree planted for her Platinum Jubilee. Peek inside Canberra's first school at the Schoolhouse Museum. Wander through the lush parkland, exploring the graves of early settlers. St John's is open daily for visitors. Service times and Schoolhouse opening hours are available on its website.

Anzac Parade

Anzac Parade is the National Capital's major commemorative way. Walk the length of the parade past memorials dedicated to Australian and New Zealand service people who've fought and died in war. The red gravel central strip of this visually powerful landmark was originally made from crushed Canberra house bricks, chosen, in part, to echo the crunch made by military boots during a parade. Anzac Parade's dark eucalypt 'walls' are created by Victorian Blue Gum. Central planter boxes are sewn with native New Zealand Hebe 'Otari Delight' to symbolise the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps connection.

St John's Schoolhouse Museum

St John's Schoolhouse was Canberra's first school and school master's residence. It opened in 1845 to provide elementary education for children from the Campbell estate of Duntroon and surrounding farms. Many family names of former pupils can be seen on gravestones in St John's Churchyard. In 1907, the School was closed, but in 1969 the restored Schoolhouse building was reopened as a museum of Canberra's early history and education. St John's Schoolhouse Museum is proud of its role in the community as one of Canberra's first museums. Displays feature early education artefacts and photographs of the district. These enable visitors to imagine the very different scene of rural Canberra, before it became the Federal Capital. The Schoolhouse is very much a part of the historic St John's Church precinct, which in 2025 celebrated 180 years of serving the local community. A visit to the Schoolhouse should ideally take in the associated historic Church and Churchyard. Schools and other groups are most welcome to visit the Museum throughout the year, for a reasonable charge per head. A modest fee is charged for adult visitors to the Museum. (EPTPOS available). Note, though, that the Museum is closed for a few weeks over the summer school holidays.
