Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel Statues

Dad and Dave Statue pays tribute to Steele Rudd's famous Snake Gully characters — Dad, Dave, Mum, and Mabel. Created in copper by sculptor Aurel Ragus, the life-sized statues celebrate an enduring piece of Australian cultural history. The beloved characters originated in On Our Selection, Steele Rudd's stories about pioneering life and land selection in late 19th-century Australia. The humour and authenticity of the novels resonated strongly with readers, leading to the creation of the silent films On Our Selection and Rudd's New Selection. In the 1930s, the characters also inspired the popular radio series Dad and Dave. Today, the statues are on permanent display in Carberry Park beside the Gundagai Visitor Information Centre on Sheridan Street, where they continue to delight visitors and celebrate Australia's rural storytelling heritage.

Rusconi’s Marble Masterpiece

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Rusconi’s Marble Masterpiece

Rusconi's Marble Masterpiece is one of Gundagai's most remarkable attractions, proudly displayed inside the Gundagai Visitor Information Centre. Created by master stonemason Frank Rusconi, the intricate miniature cathedral is made from more than 20,000 individual pieces of marble, each carefully cut, turned and polished by hand. Born in Araluen, New South Wales, in 1874, Rusconi spent much of his childhood and early career in Europe, where he trained in the marble trade and worked on major buildings including Westminster Cathedral in London and the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. After returning to Australia, Rusconi became a passionate advocate for Australian marble, determined to demonstrate the quality and beauty of locally sourced stone. Rusconi began work on his Marble Masterpiece in 1910. Over almost three decades, he dedicated thousands of hours to shaping and assembling the extraordinary structure. Every piece was worked by hand using tools he made himself, including a treadle lathe adapted from a sewing machine. Remarkably, no plans or drawings were used. Visitors can admire the Marble Masterpiece in its purpose-built display, alongside original tools used by Rusconi and marble samples from the region. More than a miniature building, Rusconi's Marble Masterpiece tells an extraordinary story of craftsmanship, patience, innovation and regional pride.

The Great Rescue of 1852 Sculpture

Landmarks and Buildings

The Great Rescue of 1852 Sculpture

Yarri and Jacky Jacky Sculpture stands on the corner of Kitchener and Sheridan Streets in Gundagai. The larger-than-life bronze sculpture commemorates the 165th anniversary of the Great Flood of Gundagai in 1852. The monument honours the heroic efforts of Yarri and Jacky Jacky, together with other members of the Wiradjuri people, who saved approximately 69 townsfolk from the raging floodwaters. On the night of 24 June 1852, the two Wiradjuri men paddled fragile bark canoes through the flooded Murrumbidgee River, rescuing nearly one-third of Gundagai's population. Their courageous efforts continued over several days and nights in freezing and harsh conditions. Today, the sculpture stands as a powerful tribute to bravery, resilience, and compassion, and is a must-see landmark in this beautiful country town.

The Old Mill

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

The Old Mill

The Old Mill was built in 1848 by Mr J. Morley for Flood and Hanley as a flour mill, becoming the first flour mill established in Gundagai. Remarkably, the building has survived every major flood to strike the town, including the devastating floods of 1852, 1853, 1870, and 1925. Although the fierce torrents punched holes through parts of the walls, the repaired sections remain visible today as reminders of the mill's resilience. The Old Mill stands as a lasting tribute to Joseph Morley, whose solid stone foundations enabled the structure to endure generations of natural disasters. Today, it is recognised as the oldest building in Gundagai and the only surviving structure from the original township that once stood on the river flat.

Gundagai Memorial Cairns

Memorial Cairns of Gundagai consists of three historic cairns that commemorate important sites and events connected to Gundagai's early history and the devastating Great Flood of 1852. The first is the Rose Inn Cairn, located on the Gundagai Golf Course along Middleton Drive. This cairn commemorates the public house built by Thomas Lindley, which formed part of the original township of Old Gundagai before it was destroyed in the 1852 flood. The second cairn stands within the River Caravan Park and marks the journeys of several notable explorers who passed near Gundagai on their way to Port Phillip Bay, including Hamilton Hume, William Hovell, Charles Sturt, and Edward John Eyre. The site is also recognised as the location where Sturt first crossed the Murrumbidgee River. The third cairn is situated on O. I. Bell Drive at Gundagai Common. It marks the site of the National School, which was swept away in the Great Flood of 1852. Tragically, the disaster claimed the lives of the school's master and mistress, their five children, and many other townspeople. Together, these memorial cairns preserve the stories of Gundagai's pioneering past, its explorers, and the resilience of the community in the face of tragedy.
