Uranquinty Water Tower Mural

The artwork around the water tower depicts the important role that Uranquinty played during the Second World War. Uranquinty 55 Service Flying Training School was one of eight SFTS set up by the RAAF to provide intermediate and advanced flight training as part of Australia’s contribution to the Empire Air Training Scheme which was the largest single aviation training program in history. The southwestern side of the tower depicts three women from the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) formed in March 1941, working on a Wirraway engine. By 1942 there were 123 airwomen stationed at Uranquinty who carried out flight operations, manned ambulances, fire tenders and, most importantly, flight riggers and airframe inspectors and flight mechanics. Beside the women is a view of the station buildings, the Uranquinty silos and The Rock. On the north eastern side is a picture of Leonard Victor Waters, the first and only Aboriginal fighter pilot to see action during WW2. He was posted to 78 Squadron and flew 95 missions in his Kittyhawk named “Black Magic” The water tower was painted over 10 days in February 2023 by the artist, Damien Mitchell, who grew up in Wagga Wagga. It was created using a mix of acrylic ad spray paint and serves as a memorial to the history of the Uranquinty area.

Wiradjuri Reserve

Wiradjuri Reserve is located along the Mururmbidgee River, just minutes from the city centre. The concrete boat ramp is the ideal place to launch your boat and enjoy fishing in the river. The Wiradjuri Walking Track also winds its way through the reserve, alongside the Murrumbidgee for all to enjoy. A shanty town, or fringe camp, was established on the Wiradjuri Reserve in the 1930s. The settlement, locally known as Tintown, consisted of numerous huts occupied by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal families, dependent on government rations during the Great Depression. Though the town authorities tried to clear the Tintown camp in the 1940s, people continued to live in the settlement until the 1950s. Jack Argus, who was born in 1922 and grew up at Tintown, said: 'There were hundreds of huts on both sides of the river, Aboriginal and white families. It used to be known as Tent Town here, then it was Tintown and then later people called it the Bend. You didn’t like to be known as coming from Tintown, so you called it the Flats, because people didn’t know where that was' (Kabaila 1998).

Birramal Conservation Area

The Birramal Conservation Area, known locally as ‘Birramal’, is a 128-hectare site designated for the purpose of environmental conservation. This site incorporates a section of the Wiradjuri Trail between the Olympic Highway and Holbrook Road where you can be immersed in nature, art, and spectacular views of Wagga Wagga and Surrounds on foot or bike. ‘Birramal’ in the local Wiradjuri language means ‘the bush’ and reflects the important connection between Wiradjuri peoples and the land they cared for which provided food, resources and sustenance in return. This area is home to an endangered White Box Woodland community which supports the locally endangered squirrel glider. The squirrel glider is a small grey marsupial with a thick brushy tail that can glide 80 metres through the air. In the Birramal Conservation area, you will see ‘glider poles’ that link areas of vegetation. While wandering through Birramal you will see many new tree-planting sites and artificial nest boxes. Native birds and mammals, such as the squirrel glider, make their nests in hollows of ancient trees. Through vegetation clearing, many natural tree hollows have been lost. New plantings provide food and shelter for native animals, and will in the years ahead offer natural tree hollows.

Mount Erin Heritage Centre

The Mount Erin Heritage Centre is located at Wagga Wagga in the original Mount Erin Convent which was built 1874-76. This historic site is where five Presentation Sisters from Ireland established a convent and school in 1876. Since then several schools have existed here including St. Brigid’s, St Mary's, St. Eugene’s, Mount Erin High School, Trinity Senior High School and presently Kildare Catholic College. The Heritage Centre displays the history of the Presentation Sisters in the Riverina and beyond. A timeline, changes in dress, photographs and unique memorabilia show the sisters’ lifestyle over the years. A harp brought from Ireland by the pioneers, and priceless lace are among the exhibits. The story of education is told through the history of the many schools. A collection of uniforms, items, artefacts, books and over 2,000 photographs represent many decades of school life. Many pictures of music, sports and other cultural activities over the decades have created great interest. The Mount Erin Boarding School which was opened in 1890 (and still operating today) is represented by an original bed and chair and countless photos of boarders.

Natural Attractions

Wollundry Lagoon

Meandering through the Victory Memorial Gardens and Civic Centre precinct in the centre of Wagga, the Wollundry Lagoon is the perfect spot to relax or enjoy a pleasant stroll amongst native vegetation. The lagoon is important to Aboriginal people for its spiritual, historical, social and aesthetic values. It is associated with the Dreaming story of the Wawi, a reptile-like spirit which resided in, and protected the Lagoon. Wollundry is an Anglicised word derived from the Wiradjuri language. 'Walang' means 'stone' or 'hard' and 'duray', means 'having' or 'place of'. Thus Wollundry (Walangduray) means 'stone-having' or 'place of stones'. The name is probably a reference to a granite rock bar (outcropping rocks) in the river below the present day St John's Church or to the granite on which the church stands. The surrounding sandhills have been used by Aboriginal groups for camping. At the time of European settlement, families camped near the lagoon and surrounding areas. Major gatherings attended by 400-500 Aboriginal people or 'grand corroborees' occurred in 1842 and 1843. Traditional Wiradjuri food and medicine collecting and cultural activities were practised at least until the 1870s, including the use of fish balks, or weirs, for managing supplies of fish.
