Mount George Conservation Park

This park was traditionally the land of the Peramangk Peoples. During the 1840s much of the surrounding area was cleared by European settlers for farming and market gardens. Today, due to the conservation efforts of the local community and the region's cool winter conditions, Mount George Conservation Park features a great variety of vegetation and spring flowers. There are many walking trails to explore in the park, ranging in duration from 15 minutes to 2 hours. A section of the Heysen Trail also passes through the park. The park is divided into two zones. You can walk your dog in the recreation zone, between Mount George Road and Cox Creek, providing you keep it on a lead and under your control at all times. As you enter the recreation area, marvel at the majestic Mountain Gums. Look out for pea flowers, ground-hugging correas and a variety of delightful native orchids. Many native birds can be seen around the trees and shrubs, including superb blue wrens, red-browed finches, white-throated tree creepers and scarlet robins. Many mammals and reptiles also exist in the park.

Woorabinda Lake & Bushland Reserves

Just a short distance from the centre of the garden village of Stirling in the beautiful Adelaide Hills is Woorabinda Lake, part of Woorabinda Bushland Reserves. A 34-hectare park with approximately four kilometres of walking trails, lovely picnic spots and great opportunities for watching wildlife. Take a walk around the reed-fringed wetland on paths and boardwalks, then continue through a cool woodland of stringybark eucalypts; home to resident koalas. Originally constructed to supply water for steam locomotives, Woorabinda Lake is now a bushland oasis that provides a habitat for birds, fish, reptiles, mammals and amphibians. The reserves are of significant conservation and biodiversity value to the Adelaide Hills, and are cared for by Adelaide Hills Council, residents, community groups, schools and conservation groups. They form part of the Aldgate Creek catchment which feeds into the Onkaparinga River. As you walk around Woorabinda Lake watch out for the mysterious poetry bench and if you visit on a Wednesday, you might be lucky enough to see members of the Stirling Marblehead Yacht Racing Club racing their beautiful remote-controlled boats. Walk a small distance from Stirling centre (15 minutes) and enter the main reserve entrances from Ethel Street or Branch Road. It only takes a couple of minutes to drive from Stirling and 25 minutes from Adelaide city. You can park right by the lake on Woorabinda Drive.

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is the way Australia ought to be. The Sanctuary is a thriving eco-system where hundreds of Australian native animals flourish in their natural environment. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, potoroos, bettongs, and birds, rarely seen outside the feral-proof fence, all live safely at Warrawong. The Sanctuary is also the only place on mainland South Australia where you may see the elusive platypus. The award-winning Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr John Wamsley, who purchased a 35-acre dairy. Later, he and his wife Proo surrounded the property with a 2.1-metre-high, electrified, feral-proof fence. The fence, arguably the world’s first, created a safe haven where native animals were protected from introduced predators like cats and foxes. Thanks to the vision of the founders, current wife and husband owners Narelle and David have inherited a rich and diverse ecosystem where native animals prosper. Experience the tranquil haven of Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary for yourself by booking an animal encounter, behind-the-scenes experience, show, tour, or camp. Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is a serene environment for animals and humans alike. Visit them and experience the best of natural Australia.
