Shell Hill Reserve

Unique to South Australia, Shell Hill is over 5 million years old, a deposit of oyster shells that were in some places 6 metres thick. Shell Hill was formerly part of a shallow sea occupying the Murray basin. These ancient deposits have been under threat from past activities which have hopefully been halted, the remains are what we see today.

Lenger Reserve

This 95 hectare property was gifted to the National Trust of South Australia by Rudolph G. Lenger as a bird sanctuary in 1978. Paradoxically the flora attracted most attention from Biologists. By 1992 and extensive plant list containing 208 indigenous species had been identified by skilled botanists: 26 of these species are of conversation significance. The picturesque farm cottage and corral. Look at the construction. The early (circa 1900) pug and pine rooms are made of a mixture of clay, cut straw, fresh manure and water packed between the native cypress pine posts. When the original roof collapsed much of the pug and pine washed out.

The park encompasses areas of flat limestone plains, however there is a high point located in the south area of the park known locally as Hayward’s Hill, along with an old dis-used quarry in this area. Vegetation in the park is very representative of the region with mallee open woodland including red mallee and yorrell through to semi-arid low woodlands. Stands of murray pine are associated with shrubland of hopbush and cassias. If you are a keen bird watcher, keep an eye out for honeyeaters, mallee ringnecks, purple-crowned lorikeets and butcher birds.

Mallee Playground Trail

If you're travelling through the heart of the South Australian Mallee and looking for a place to stretch your legs and let the kids burn some energy then a pit-stop along the Mallee Playground Trail is a no-brainer! This community-led initiative has revitalised and connected open space reserves in three local towns - Wynarka, Karoonda and Wanbi - to become the first of its kind in the region. Karoonda Playground Blast off into a new adventure at Karoonda’s space-themed playground. Inspired by the Karoonda Meteorite, the playground boasts the only three-level (10 metre high) summit tower in South Australia. With two tunnel slides (the ‘blackholes’), a lunar rover buggy ‘space tether’ flying fox, orbiting carousel, stargazing hammock and a water play area, it’s the ultimate place to play. Wanbi Playground For nature-based play, explore the Wanbi Soldiers Memorial Playground. Developed in partnership by the local Youth Action Committee and local residents, this play space incorporates natural toned traditional play equipment with other natural elements for a unique play experience. An accessible public toilet has also been installed within the reserve, and there’s a shelter area, making it a family friendly destination right on the Karoonda Highway. Wynarka Playground The Wynarka Playground was redeveloped with refurbished play equipment installed in a partnership between the District Council of Karoonda East Murray and the Wynarka Recreation Reserve Committee.

Landmarks and Buildings

Karoonda Shuffle Screens

The Karoonda Shuffle installation is a symbolic depiction of grain crops, the backbone of South Australia's Mallee farming. Erected on 6 old silo pads the static structures represent the 6 months or so of the growing season. They create an illusion of movement, appearing to shuffle as you pass by them. See how the silhouette shapes interact with each other, against the sky and background shapes, how the light and shadow effects change throughout the day and seasons. Take a stroll, or jog, around and through the wheat silhouettes and create your own visual experience of the 'Karoonda Shuffle'.

Karoonda Day & Night Silo Art

Visit Australia’s first silo art display that can be experienced both day and night. The Karoonda Silo Art combines a unique mix of large-scale mural for daytime viewing with colourful art projections that bring the giant grain silos to life at night. Created by renowned Australian street artist Heesco, the painted mural celebrates Karoonda’s rural lifestyle, pristine environment and agricultural heritage. By night, an ever-changing display of art from South Australian artists lights up the main street attraction. The projection artworks are continually changing, meaning there’s always something new to see. Rain, hail or shine, the projection shows run all year, every evening from sunset for up to three hours. In 2021 the Karoonda Silo Art won 1st prize (Gold) in the Mega Mural category at the Australian Street Art Awards, and also won the “Best of the Best” in the awards.

Marne Valley Conservation Park

The 105 hectare Marne Valley Conservation Park is bisected by the Marne River, which provides a focal point for the park. The park was dedicated in 1976 and consists of gently undulated land. Much of the park is comprised of low lying, seasonally inundated giant river red gum flats. Other vegetation communities in the park include mallee boc, narrow-leaf mallee and white mallee. In the south western corner, along the eastern central boundary, and along the northern boundary the native vegetation has largely been cleared. The cleared areas are low open shrublands dominated by various exotic grasses, ephemerals, small-leafed bluebush, climbing twinleaf, bassia, balcarra grass and bladder saltbush. Visitors can access the park by foot by several of the management tracks, but should be mindful of seasonal conditions prior to setting out. Walk quietly and you may be rewarded with sightings of western grey kangaroos taking shelter in patches of vegetation or feeding on the grasslands. If you have a keen eye you may also spot waterfowl or hear the distinct call of the iconic kookaburra echoing through the red gum woodland.

Swan Reach Conservation Park

Swan Reach Conservation Park is a classic example of Australia’s semi-arid mallee environment. You will find tranquillity in the gently undulating limestone country with its thick local mallee canopy overhead. There are also a few small patches of low woodland comprising false sandalwood and bullock bush with an understory of stipa grass. With around 2,017 hectares to explore, don’t be surprised if you stumble across signs of a southern hairy-nosed wombat, as these elusive creatures were the primary reason for the proclamation of this park in 1970. The park is an astronomer’s paradise and forms the “core” zone of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. The unpolluted skies and isolation from artificial light sources make the park one of the best places on Earth to gaze at the stars.
