Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary

Zoos, Sanctuaries, Aquariums and Wildlife Parks

Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary

The Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary provides a home to one of Adelaide's best-loved creatures, the Bottlenose Dolphin. These wild dolphins come here to eat, play, socialise and live and can be seen most days from both water and land look outs. The sanctuary is one of the gems of metropolitan Adelaide. Including the Port River, Barker Inlet, Outer Harbour and North Haven marinas, reaching as far north as Port Gawler. Located only 20 minutes from the city, the area features a 10,000-year-old mangrove forest and over 40 resident bottlenose dolphins, while another 300 dolphins visit the area regularly. The area is also popular for its natural wonders, making it one of the easily accessible Dolphin Sanctuaries in the world. Other wildlife that can easily be spotted are sting rays, long nosed fur seals and endangered Australian sea lions. The area is also a popular bird watching site and shares most of its northern coastal habitat with Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary. Why not come along and try your hand at fishing, dolphin watching, bird watching and paddle boarding.

Pondi: Kurri Winth-amaldi (Murray Cod: River Creator)

The Ngarrindjeri are 'water people' from the Lakes, Coorong, Great Southern Ocean and river systems of the area south and east of Adelaide in South Australia. For tens of thousands of years Ruwe (Country) has provided them with abundant fresh foods, medicines and rushes for weaving baskets, nets, scoops, fish, and eel traps. The story of Pondi is a key Ngarrindjeri creation story. Aunty Ellen Trevorrow created the Pondi woven from river rushes (Cyperu gymnacaulos and Cyperus vaginatus). Through it, she honours her ngartji or totem, on display at the SA Maritime Museum.

Semaphore Timeball

The Semaphore Time Ball Tower was in use 1875-1932 and is the only such tower in the State. It is significant for its uniqueness and for being a relic of the era before wireless telegraphy, when the accuracy of vessels' chronometers was checked by 'rating' them against time balls in major ports. The Semaphore Time Ball was dropped at a specific time each day by an electric impulse transmitted by landline from the Adelaide Observatory. There were once at least two other time ball structures in South Australia, in Port Pirie and Port Adelaide, but both were mounted on existing buildings. Most days you can still see the Time Ball drop at 1pm – but the tower is an old girl now, so please be kind if she forgets now and then.

Semaphore Merry-go-Round (Carousel)

This beautiful vintage carousel which is the largest in Australia was built in 1928. It is located on the beautiful Semaphore Foreshore Park on the Esplanade near the jetty. The horses were hand-carved at a reputed cost of £20 each by Melbourne craftsmen with modest ornamentation. Driven by an electrical lift motor and gearbox, it was the envy of the steam-driven carousels of the day. Originally based at Henley Beach the carousel was moved to Jubilee Oval before coming to stay at Semaphore. Carousels have always had a part to play at the Semaphore Foreshore Carnival.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

The Semaphore Angel War Memorial Clock Tower Cenotaph

The Semaphore War Memorial Clock Tower is a beautiful granite tower topped by an Angel representing Peace, carved from Italian marble. 'The Semaphore Angel', as she is known, was unveiled in 1925. The granite tower replaced a temporary wood and iron arch over the entrance to the Jetty, which served as a Roll of Honour. Bearing no names, but just the simple inscription "In Memory of All Who Fell in the Great War, 1914-1918". The Semaphore Soldiers' Memorial stands at the shore end of the jetty. The four-dialled clock with faces 4 ft (1.21m) in diameter is unusual in that, instead of the Roman numerals, each hour is marked by the numeral '1'. This gives the dial greater symmetry and a better background, and at night, the clock face is visible from a greater distance. Located at the end of the jetty on the beautiful Semaphore Foreshore Reserve on the Esplanade at Semaphore the Clock Tower can be seen along Semaphore Road.
