A rare and extraordinary example of a continuously lived-in Australian colonial home, still complete with its original furnishings and items of historical interest spanning 160 years of Australian history. Built in 1857 originally as an Inn on the road to the goldfields, Garroorigang became a private home in 1867 and the site up until 1883 of a small private boarding school for the "sons of gentlemen" where a number of famous Australians were educated. The home has been lived in continuously for over 150 years by members of two related families and is today the private home of the Hume family, co-lateral descendants of Explorer Hamilton Hume. The home is filled with original furnishings and family memorabilia reflecting 150 years of living Australian history from the days of the bushrangers down through the Victorian era to the present. Family members provide visitors with a guided tour through the home explaining the history behind the many historical treasures and the stories of the people who have lived there. A visit to Garroorigang is truly a step back in time into a showcase of living Australian history, fascinating for all ages. The homestead is set in beautiful gardens suitable for picnics and morning/afternoon teas. Bed and breakfast accommodation is available by arrangement. Coaches and groups are welcome by appointment.

Sts Peter and Paul's Old Cathedral

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Sts Peter and Paul's Old Cathedral

Sts Peter and Paul's Old Cathedral is a significant example of 19th century Gothic ecclesiastical design and craftsmanship. The Cathedral is constructed from diorite porphyrite (greenstone) and is the only church of this stone in Australia, possibly the world. The organ is the only unaltered William Hill organ in Australia, and is the second most important of his organs after the Sydney Town Hall organ. The parish was established in 1839 with the first church constructed on the current site in 1848. The Diocese of Goulburn was then created in 1862 with Bishop Geoghegan appointed as the first Bishop. Bishop Geoghegan died in Ireland before taking up his appointment with Bishop Lanigan being appointed as second Bishop and consecrated in the old church of Sts Peter and Paul’s. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1871 with the Mr Andrea Stombuco the architect. Andrea’s experience included the original St Patrick’s College Goulburn and the original portion of the Argyle Technical College (now Goulburn’s Hume Conservatorium). During construction of the nave the old church was used as the sanctuary. The foundations for the transepts, sanctuary, tower and sacristy commenced in 1887 and the Cathedral was completed in 1890 with a large bell (cast in Ireland) installed in the tower. Renovations took place in 1927 where the marble floor, high altar and extensive timber joinery were added.

St Saviours Anglican Cathedral

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

St Saviour's Cathedral Goulburn

The stunning bell tower, soaring windows and massive stonework are the first impressions one has of St Saviour's. The Cathedral dominates Bourke Street and interrupts the through flow of Montague Street. Royal Letters Patent issued by Queen Victoria in March 1863 established the Diocese of Goulburn giving Goulburn city status and making it Australia's first inland city. Built around the old St Saviour's Church from 1874 to 1884, St Saviour's Cathedral is one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. Both the Cathedral and Hall were designed by one of Australia's most well-known architects, Edmund T. Blacket. The tower was built and bells were installed as per the original design in 1988 as a bicentennial project. In 2006, the final three bells were installed, giving Goulburn the only 12-bell country peal in the Southern Hemisphere. The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought-after by organists who wish to play it. Volunteer guides, and minders are in attendance subject to availability.
