Fossil Rock

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Fossil Rock

A fossil leaf deposit with particularly fine detail has been preserved in Dalton, located just 10 minutes north of Gunning. Research has dated this fossil back to the early Miocene era, around 21 million years ago, when a lava flow dammed the Lachlan River and created a lake over what is now Dalton. The fossil can be seen under the shelter in the park along Oolong Creek. Dalton has long attracted the attention of geologists. Back in the late 1880s, it was a thriving gold mining town, with reports that in 1879 ore crushing batteries were operating 24 hours a day. The town is also famous for experiencing regular earth tremors as it is situated on a geologically active fault in the earth's crust.

Pye Cottage Museum

Pye Cottage Museum is an original settler's slab hut that was built in Dalton in 1860. It was donated to the Gunning Historical Society by the Pye family and painstakingly moved to Gunning in 1974. Take a step back in time, view a variety of documents and artefacts and enjoy reliving the historic pioneering days. Pye Cottage Museum is one of the last of its kind in the district, which had been used for generations past by the early settlers of the Highlands. There are many other historically significant buildings to see and visit in Gunning, many of which date back to the 1800s. Here's just a couple of suggestions: why not have a quiet drink in the Telegraph Hotel ( dates back to 1858) or a coffee and cake at the Merino Café (dates back to 1881). Pye Cottage Museum is run entirely by volunteers. For tours of the museum, please phone ahead and make an appointment.

Banjo Paterson Park

Banjo Paterson Park was acquired and constructed in 1944 as Central Park. It was then renamed in 1948 in honour of Australia's famous writer and poet, Banjo Paterson. Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong, New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Waltzing Matilda" "The Man from Snowy River", and "Clancy of the Overflow". When Paterson was a young boy, his family took over his uncle's farm in Illalong near Yass. A bust at the park commemorates Banjo Paterson who lived in the Yass district as a boy. The bust is a replica of the bronze original sculpted by Mrs Folks which was unveiled in Banjo Paterson Park on 2 November, 1950. The original bust is now housed at the Yass Valley Information Centre.
