Adams lookout

Adams lookout may seem to be a pretty ordinary name, so it may not prepare you for the extraordinary view that awaits you at the end of the walkway. Like a well-constructed movie, the relatively flat paved path keeps you in suspense nearly all the way to the two-tiered platform. You're then hit with the most fantastic view in the park of the 300m high limestone cliffs of Bungonia Slot Canyon (only 25m apart), the beautiful Bungonia Creek Gorge and distant views of Ettrema Wilderness way over in Morton National Park. After you've managed to turn away from the spectacular view, have a look around to see if you can spot the pair of nesting peregrine falcons that regularly fly above the gorge near this lookout. Bring a picnic lunch with you and, like the rock-climbers who come to Bungonia to scale its canyon walls, hang around for a while. Finally, join up with the Green track to explore more of the natural environment. Take a virtual tour of Adams lookout captured with Google Street View Trekker.

The Lookdown lookout

Natural Attractions

The Lookdown lookout

The word lookdown' sounds quaint and old-fashioned because its origins are in the late 1800s, back when ladies wore layers of petticoats and gentlemen their three-piece suits for a day out in the bush. The Lookdown lookout is perched on the edge of the plateau above the Bungonia Slot Canyon. It's an easy 50m stroll from the carpark to this breathtaking view into Bungonia Creek Gorge and across to Ettrema Wilderness area in Morton National Park. Spectacular grass trees grow in this area and throughout the park. Their growth rate is around 1cm each year. See how many can you spot near the lookdown that were already growing here before the park was first protected as a water reserve in 1872. Also, take a walk along the Molly O'Neill nature track and listen out for a particular lyrebird that lives nearby with its impressive talent for bird and animal calls. Green track

Green track is like the tasting plate of Bungonia National Park. The loop walk offers an overview of the park by taking in all the main lookouts and natural environments. It’s a moderately easy hike, so pack a picnic lunch and stop at De Kerrilleau picnic area along the way. Setting out from David Reid carpark, hike through eucalypt woodlands on the plateau, dry rainforest in the gullies and see evidence of the area’s limestone karst in the rocky outcrops and cave entrances. Try to imagine the church services held inside Mass Cave during the 1950s as you walk past. From Adams lookout, enjoy the superb view of Bungonia Slot Canyon and keep an eye out for a pair of nesting peregrine falcons while you’re there. Lyrebirds are likely to be heard near the junction to Molly O’Neill nature track. Keep an eye out for other wildlife as well – can you tell the difference between a swamp wallaby and a red-necked wallaby?

Badgerys Spur Walking Track

Fit and active visitors looking for a day’s adventure won’t want to miss Badgerys Spur walking track, a steep and challenging descent through a beautiful eucalyptus forest that skirts the edge of Ettrema Wilderness Area. Given the size of Morton National Park, there’s a good chance you won’t see many other people around, making this a perfect choice for anybody hoping for a bit of solitude in the wild. Make sure you’re well-prepared for your trip, bringing plenty of water and some sturdy shoes. Don’t forget binoculars for a bit of birdwatching along the way. You might even be lucky enough to spot lace monitors and water dragons, too. After twisting down over 1.5 kilometres, the track crosses Dungeon Creek and finishes up on the bank of Shoalhaven River, where you can settle down for a leisurely, well-earned lunch, or pull on the swimmers for a dip in the water if temperatures are warm enough. To extend the walk further, carry a tent into the informal campground by the river and make a night of it.

Hidden Valley Farms

Agritourism

Hidden Valley Farms

Hidden Valley Farms story started over 25 years ago when they first laid eyes on this piece of land, well hidden from everyone's view. What they saw was a 100-year-old farm that was tired and needed passion and devotion to bring it back to life. They always knew that one day their farm will become our sanctuary. However, a corporate international career kept pushing this idea back until the world turned upside down with Covid's arrival and many families had to make some life changing decisions. Theirs was to adopt a beautiful 8-year-old boy, return to Australia and focus on sharing their passion for organically grown food with their family and friends. Today, they take pride in their boutique olive grove that produces one of the tastiest Extra Virgin Olive Oils you will ever experience, the truffière with its deliciouslyperfumed French Périgord Black Truffles and a 100-year-old fruit orchard. In addition to fresh produce and wild organic honey, they recently added a new item to their paddock – organically grown fresh garlic as well as expanded into gourmet salt mixes and relishes to cater to those customers who are looking for a unique farm kitchen experience.

Molly O'Neill nature track

Natural Attractions

Molly O'Neill nature track

Molly O’Neill was an amateur botanist who passionately dedicated herself to exploring and researching what was, at the time, Bungonia Reserve and is now Bungonia National Park. It is only fitting, therefore, that a walking track has been named in her honour. Take your time along this short track to read the interpretive signage and see what you can learn about some of the plants native to the park. Enjoy the wildflowers during spring and keep your binoculars handy to look at the wildlife whose habitats you’re passing through. During daylight hours, you’re most likely to see wallaroos, wallabies, kangaroos, goannas and lyrebirds. At night, you may get a glimpse of a glider and you will almost certainly see possums. The track passes through the park’s typical eucalyptus woodland with limestone outcrops and ends, with a flourish at The Lookdown lookout. For a longer hike try the Green track.

Located on the Sydney side of Goulburn on the Hume Highway, The Towrang Stockade was the Chief Penal Camp in the southern district of the newly founded colony of New South Wales from 1833 to 1843. Up to 250 convict men were housed there and were engaged in the construction of a section of the Great South Road, from Sydney to Goulburn. These men were divided into two parties; the seven-year men were without irons and were assigned the lighter tasks, while the 14-year men and lifers were in irons and given hard labour. Dressed in a yellow and black uniform, the convicts slept 10 men to a 12 square metre cell, on bare boards, with one blanket rationed to each man. A parking area runs alongside the east-bound, left hand lane of the Hume Highway off Towrang Road.

Located on a prominent rocky outcrop, the memorial is a must-visit, with the viewing platform at the top providing a spectacular view over the city of Goulburn and the surrounding areas. A small museum opened in the basement of the tower in 1927 to house a collection of objects from the Great War, including sixteen items of national significance.
