Little Blowhole

Natural Attractions

Little Blowhole

Another of nature's particularly special skills, the Little Blowhole is a little bit hard to find but well worth the effort. The display can be sighted (and heard) best when the seas are from the northeast - the spray reaches remarkable heights and can be viewed from a viewing platform or on the rocky foreshore. It is arguably more consistent than its larger cousin, and when the swell is small it is often more spectacular. Situated off Tingira Crescent, roughly two kilometres south of the Kiama Township, you can walk to nearby coffee shops or south around the headland to Easts Beach.

Easts Beach is just a short walk away from the Little Blowhole and Bonaira Native Gardens, while Munna Munnora Creek (found at the southern end of the beach) is a good spot for the little ones to splash around. It creates a direct connection between place and story, turning everyday locations into places of discovery. Each plaque reveals a unique piece of history, encouraging visitors to explore local areas from a new perspective and uncover stories they may never have known. This blue plaque commemorates Charmian Clift who was a writer that boldly challenged societal norms and explored the complexities of identity, relationships, and the human experience. Dry Stone Walls

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Historic Dry Stone Walls, Kiama

Reminiscent of the Kiama area's strong farming history, many of the stone walls were constructed more than a century ago as paddocks were cleared for cropping and stock agistment. Fine examples can be seen in the hills and valleys west of Kiama township, with much of the work being attributed to Thomas Newing, a prolific and skilled stone wall builder who worked in the area for over 60 years. The building method developed by Newing uses the local volcanic stone, and consists of two wall faces leaning against each other capped by a continuous row of larger stones. Nearly 400 stone walls have been listed as heritage items in the Kiama Municipality. The walls that occur along the Saddleback Mountain Road have been repaired or reconstructed by volunteers using the traditional methods. More information on the history of the area, including the dry stone walls, can be found at the Kiama Library and on their website.

Kiama Heritage Walk

For such a small area, the Kiama region has so much to share of its past - both from Indigenous culture and the two centuries since European settlement. Throughout the municipality, you'll find information and plaques that provide a window into how things used to be. Immerse yourself in the area's timeline by grabbing a copy of the Heritage Walks brochure from the Kiama Visitor Information Centre. This simple brochure maps out historically significant points of interest including the Kiama Lighthouse, Pilot's Cottage, Post Office, Terrace Houses, Masonic Temple, Old Fire Station, original banks, pubs and churches in the Kiama town centre and surrounding suburbs of Gerringong and Jamberoo. Also you have to visit the famous Blowhole, a unique natural feature which George Bass discovered on December 6, 1797 when on his voyage of coastal exploration. Alternatively, download the Kiama Library's My Place: A Digital Tour of Kiama app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device and follow the virtual guide around the highlights of Kiama. The tour includes 15 points of interest, six audio components and takes approximately 45 minutes to navigate through - the perfect complement to your walk.

Kiama Lighthouse

Located on Blowhole Point, the Kiama Lighthouse is hard to miss. Established in 1887, 10 years after the creation of the Robertson Basin, the man-made Kiama Harbour, the lighthouse sits 36.5 metres above sea level. The Principal Keeper's House was destroyed by vandals in the 1920s. However, the single storey Assistant Keeper's House, used for many years as a residence for harbour pilots, is now the Pilots' Cottage Museum. There is no access available to the inside of the lighthouse.

Black Beach - Kiama

Kiama’s Black Beach gets its name (and colour) from the black basalt sand and cobbles that line its shore. Although less popular with swimmers than with snorkelers, the ocean pools on either side of Black Beach are both beautiful places to enjoy a saltwater swim. Spend a while relaxing on the sprawling grass of Black Beach Reserve, or test your skills on the stunning granite ping-pong table. Conveniently situated between Kiama Harbour and the centre of town, Black Beach also hosts some of Kiama’s most well-known events, including the markets held on the third Sunday and fourth Sunday of the month. Nearby points of interest include the historic Kiama Post Office (constructed in 1878), and a memorial to the SS Bombo, a now-popular dive site that departed here for the final time on 24 February 1949.
