Malcolm Museum

The Malcolm Building Museum holds a collection of historic photographs and local artefacts. Built-in the late 1800's, originally owned by Malcolm and Beatty, the first Stock and Station Agents in Balranald. Andrew Malcolm was a Magistrate, Land Valuer, Tax Agent, Insurance Agent and more. The Balranald Shire purchased the building in 1986 to be used by the people of Balranald as a Museum. It holds many interesting items from years gone by. Situated in the Balranald Discovery Complex.

Balranald Heritage Trail

Various early explorers, including John Oxley in 1817, Charles Sturt in 1830 and Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1836 - visited the area. It was Mitchell's enthusiastic comments about the quality of the land in the region that encouraged settlement, and Balranald was gazetted in 1851. As a crossing point on the Murrumbidgee River, Balranald prospered throughout the second half of the 19th century. Swing Bridge - Balranald

Located on Court Street, cross the swing bridge over the Murrumbidgee River and follow walking tracks both to the left and right hand sides. Keep an eye out for Yellow Rosellas, Kookaburras and the occasional echidna, not forgetting kangaroos and emus. You can take a leisurely walk or even go for a bike ride to follow the walking tracks.

For fishing folk, there are five rivers of the fishing trail in the Balranald region, which include the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Wakool, Edward and Murray Rivers. Balranald Shire Council assists local fishing clubs in restocking these rivers with native fish. The five rivers are within 30 minutes of Balranald township. Whether you chase Murray cod, yellow belly, perch or redfin, fishing the Five Rivers Fishing Trail will have you telling plenty of fishing tales. The Five Rivers Fishing Trail map provides an easy reference to all the best spots and can be picked up from the Balranald Visitor Information Centre.

Ben Scott Memorial Bird Trail

Ben Scott Memorial Bird Trail is part of the Tri-Avian Corridor - walk through the mini-wetlands on the tracks and boardwalks to the bird hides. Look for and listen to the sounds of birds in the bush. Look out for the Spotted Harrier, Rainbow Bee-eater, Yellow Throated Miner or the Striated Pardalote and many others The Bird Trail has two bird hides and a wooden bridge over the water that is in the depressions at times. Water is allowed to flood the bird hides area when available, however this does not stop Visitors from the bird hides and higher areas.

Yanga Woolshed

Located along Murrumbidgee River, Yanga Woolshed was built in the late 1800s. Once the largest, most modern woolshed in the district, it housed 3,000 sheep and provided work for up to 40 shearers at a time. Today, the woolshed is in Yanga National Park and you can wander through it on a self-guided tour, exploring its runs and pens, getting a feel for an authentic 19th century woolshed and a taste of Australian history. You'll also find an interpretive display to fill you in on the history of the area once Yanga Sheep Station. Close your eyes and breathe in the smells of the past, imagining the sounds of docked paddle boats outside, waiting to transport their wool cargo down the river highway. Don't forget to check out the viewing platform for great river views; it was once where the old wharf stood. Pack lunch and visit the nearby Yanga Woolshed picnic area or stay overnight at Mamanga campground. Yanga Woolshed is also available for weddings and private functions.

The steep and rough track descends from Yanga Lake viewing deck through majestic river red gums and river coobas to the very shores of the immense lake. Explore the wonderful Yanga Homestead and return to a time when Yanga was one of the Riverina's most productive pastoral stations. Located in Yanga National Park, the homestead was built around 1870, along with station outbuildings including stables, a gardener's shed and station store. There are also rose gardens, restored and maintained by volunteers. You can visit the Cook's Cottage exhibition and wander around the grounds at any time. While you're here, marvel at the homestead's unique Murray pine drop log' design. Once you've explored the homestead, take the opportunity to explore the surrounding area along Yanga Lake walking track. You'll pass Yanga Lake viewing deck a great place to see evidence of the lake's Aboriginal heritage and birdlife.

Yanga Historic Refrigeration Shed

The refrigeration unit was one of Australia's first when pioneering meat exporter Arthur Sims installed it in 1922. Refrigeration was a major boon to the isolated Yanga Homestead and its staff of 40. Chilled to near freezing temperatures, the cool rooms were used to make ice blocks. The ice was used in domestic ice boxes to cool milk, butter and vegetables.

From this elevated scenic lookout, you'll be enthralled by sweeping 270 degree views of the immense 1,200ha wetlands. Look for Pelican Point to the south and Regatta Beach to the west. Keep an ear out for the rumbling call of the endangered southern bell frog. This park protects vital feeding and breeding grounds for more than 150 species of migratory and water birds. Yanga National Park offers you a chance to camp by the banks of the Murrumbidgee like Burke and Wills once did. From the early explorers, to shearers and rabbit trappers, fishermen and campers people have flocked to this area for all sorts of reasons. Acquaint yourself with bygone days at the old Yanga homestead and woolshed. The Cook's Cottage and refrigeration shed exhibitions are open daily and you can wander around the grounds of Yanga Homestead. The area also has a long and significant Aboriginal history. Families have lived here for a millennia and today you can visit significant Aboriginal cultural sites. With unbeatable bird watching, you might see as many as 150 species of birds in the park's trees, skies and ecologically-important wetlands. Be sure to check out Yanga Lake Red Gum bird hide. To stay longer, make a booking and pitch your tent at Mamanga campground, Woolpress Bend campground, or The Willows campground and enjoy a spot of fishing by the river. If the park office in Balranald is unattended you can also find plenty of visitor information at Balranald Discovery Centre.

With so much to do on and around the water, you might be tempted to stay a while in the Riverina area. Spend a couple of nights at Mamanga campground and explore the unique natural and cultural heritage of the river country, including Yanga Homestead precinct.

Tooleybuc River Walk

Starting from Mensforth Park in Tooleybuc, enjoy this peaceful walk from the Tooleybuc Bridge along the Murray River, finishing at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club. The heritage-listed Tooleybuc Bridge was the last of the timber truss bridges with a lift span to be built over the Murray River. Head north and see the Bridge Keepers Cottage on Murray St. The 1930s-era timber and tin cottage has been restored. It was home to the Bridge Keeper and his family up until 1994. Adjacent to the cottage is the original Punt Gate. Mensforth Park also features a playground and picnic area. From here, follow the river along the sealed path and enjoy the glorious river, birdlife, and fresh air. When the path nears Herbert St, turn off and head to the Tooleybuc Sporting Club, home to the enormous Mallee Root – the second-biggest ever found.

Tooleybuc Bridge Over Murray River

The heritage-listed Tooleybuc Bridge is certainly worth stopping and viewing. Tooleybuc Bridge was constructed in 1924 in response to the speedy expansion of the fruit-growing industry in the area. This bridge is a timber truss bridge with a vertical lift span and was the last of engineer Percy Allan’s bridge designs. The Tooleybuc Bridge is the last in the series of timber truss bridges with lift spans to be built over the Murray River and is one of only two surviving bridges over the Murray River that incorporate Allan truss spans. A caretaker was appointed to Tooleybuc Bridge upon its opening to operate the lift span for river traffic and perform general maintenance and cleaning. The caretaker’s cottage was built next to the bridge in the 1930s as a residence for the caretaker and his family.

Speewa Ferry

Located just 20 kilometres north of Swan Hill, the Speewa Ferry first started operating in 1904. Locals from the area still talk about how the ferry was originally operated by hand winch! Now, in modern-day, the ferry is controlled by a diesel engine and can take up to two cars per ride. The Speewa Ferry runs every day between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:30 pm with two, one-hour breaks each day and is toll-free. The Ferry is controlled by NSW Roads and Maritime and is one of only two ferries to cross the Murray River on the NSW and Victoria borders, the other being the Wymah Ferry.
