Big Potato

Robertson's 'Big Potato' becomes 'Pig Potato' to celebrate 30 years of movie Babe. Robertson's "Big Potato" has swapped its starchy roots for a cinematic twist, transforming into the "Pig Potato" to celebrate 30 years since the beloved film Babe was shot on family farms in the area. Painted by Corrimal artist Samuel Hall, the iconic landmark now features Babe, Ferdinand the duck, and the three singing mice from the Oscar-nominated film — bringing a playful dose of nostalgia and community pride to Robertson. Background - Australia is home to a long list of 'big things', with Robertson's Big Potato only one of approximately 150 sculptures and large structures of this ilk scattered throughout the country. Showcasing the main crop of the area, the giant spud was built in 1977 and measures around 10 metres long and four metres wide. Designed with a hollow interior, you can actually enter the attraction – inside, it has been painted to look like a mashed potato. Image: Big Potato - Credit: Neil Tait

Stroll along the wheelchair-friendly walking track and surround yourself with the dense rainforest that once covered the landscape around Robertson. Looking up at the sheer density of the vines, you can see why the Yarrawa Brush, as it it’s known, was so difficult to penetrate for early explorers. If you’re keen on birdwatching, keep your binoculars handy and you might just spot Lewin's honeyeaters, white-browed scrub hens, crimson rosellas, wonga pigeons or satin bowerbirds. You’re sure to at least hear the distinctive whip crack call of the eastern whipbird. Look out for wombat burrows, and if you look really closely, you might even notice the delicate rainforest snails and other invertebrates picking their way through the ferns and mosses.

Clover Hill Trail

For a varied and interesting walk, take the Clover Hill trail. This old logging route leads to Rainbow Falls and three smaller falls upstream on the Macquarie Rivulet. After walking in the dense shade of the forest, suddenly the landscape opens up at Clover Hill – these are the paddocks cleared by farmers over a century ago. High above, the massive cliffs of the escarpment glow yellow and orange in the sunlight. Bushwalkers, birdwatchers and adventurers will love this walk, with its sharp contrast between rainforest and open fields. The huge rainforest trees, eucalypts, beefwood, Illawarra flame trees, cabbage tree palms and tree ferns, home to lyrebirds and goannas, give way to sunny plains where you will often see kangaroos hopping about. Highlights include a spectacular view of the escarpment, and adventurers may wish to scramble upstream at the end of the track to access Rainbow Falls.
