Moss Vale Golf Club

Moss Vale Golf Club

Moss Vale Golf Course is a golfers paradise in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales and is regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging courses in regional NSW. Avenues of mature pines, elms, gums and vividly coloured claret ash flank the winding course which was completed in its current layout in 1936. Moss Vale Golf Club was founded in 1902 and designed in its current location and layout by Carnegie Clark in 1936. The 18 Hole Championship Golf Course is a par 71, and 5805 metres from the men's tees, Par 73 and 5300 metres from the women's tees. A number of twists and turns, creek crossings and deceptive greens, make the course a true test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round! The Moss Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening five holes, it levels out and heads into the quiet countryside.

Cecil Hoskins picnic area

Great things come in small packages and this little picnic area beside Wingecarribee River is no exception to that rule. Bring along the family and your picnic supplies and set up for a few relaxing hours in this tranquil wetland setting. You could even bring your own gas stove and enjoy a barbecue. After a hot day, it's a great place for picnicking in the evening. Feel free to wander the area, taking binoculars with you for some birdwatching as you try to spot the many species of woodland birds and waterbirds. See if you can also find the two rare old Paddys River box trees. They've been around much longer than us. If you want to explore a bit further, Wingecarribee River walking track begins and ends at the picnic area. This walking track loops you through regenerating forest on Wingecarribee floodplain.

Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve

National Parks and Reserves

Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve

A Southern Highlands wetland sounds unlikely, but it does exist. When Bong Bong weir was constructed in the 1920s to supply water to Moss Vale, a lagoon and swamp area formed at that part of Wingecarribee River. Only 12 years later it was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Now, over 90 species of birds, a third of which are waterbirds, have made it their temporary or permanent home. Whether you're keen on birdwatching or just looking for a peaceful place to enjoy walking and a quiet picnic, Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve awaits you. The land was originally part of 1,000ac granted in 1819 to Charles Throsby in recognition of his exploration of a route from the Southern Highlands to the Bathurst district. This area is also where Bong Bong village, the first settlement in the Southern Highlands, once stood. Although the village no longer exists, you can view historic Throsby Park from the reserve, where colonial buildings remain intact.

Weir View walking track

When you follow Weir View walking track along the lagoon’s southern bank, it’s hard to believe that this natural environment abundant with birdlife hasn’t been here for eons. In fact, the lagoon only appeared after Bong Bong weir was constructed in the 1920s, though it didn’t take long for the newly formed wetland to become recognised as a wildlife sanctuary. So while you’re stretching your legs, clearing your head or allowing the kids to let off steam along this lovely walking track, keep an eye out for all the birds and animals that now make this reserve their home. Weir View walking track offers scenic views across the water to the wooded slopes on the southern side of the reserve. It’s a short easy walk with a flat surface and no stairs, making it ideal for walkers of all ages and fitness levels. Keep your binoculars handy and see how many different bird species you can spot while birdwatching.

Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens

Set across 33 acres, Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens have been growing a cool-climate garden since opening in 2013. The highlands are recognised for their seasonal interest. With a mix of native and garden exotic areas, there's something to enjoy in every season. They are proud to showcase four nationally recognised plant collections, officially recorded in the National Plant Collections Register. These include 23 varieties of Betula (Birch) in the Birch Grove. 21 types of Buxus (Boxwood), as well as collections of Dwarf Cornus (Dogwood) and Narcissus (Tony Davis Daffodils). They are re-establishing the endangered ecological community that would have originally been on this site, the southern highlands shale woodland. Take in the fresh air and open spaces, and enjoy something special in every season - from vibrant blooms in spring and summer, to the rich colours of autumn, striking bark textures and winter flowers in the cooler months. Take in some sculptures, including Leaping Frog by John Olsen. Spot some local wildlife, a haven for blue fairy wrens, Eastern spinebills and thornbills, lizards, snakes, right down to blue-banded native bees. The gardens are not-for-profit, community-funded, and operated.
