Harper's Mansion

A beautiful mansion built in 1834 with charming gardens and one of the largest hedge mazes in Australia, all overlooking historic Berrima. Perched high on a hill in Gundungurra and Tharawal Country, Harper's Mansion is a superb example of an early colonial Georgian country house, and a must-see for garden lovers. Visitors can tour the restored mansion and learn about the rise and fall of the Harper family and the rich stories they left behind. Outside, explore two acres of cool-climate gardens that are bursting with perennials and a selection of heritage roses and camellias. A visit wouldn't be complete without a wander through the extensive hedge maze, planted in 1999 and a constant delight for children.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Berrima Heritage Walk

Berrima was established in the 1830s during a time of great exploration and expansion in New South Wales. In 1829 surveyor general Major Thomas Mitchell camped near the site of the present bridge over the Wingecarribee River while surveying the route for the Great South Road. He advised governor Bourke that there was an ideal town site, and surveyor Robert Hoddle submitted a plan for the village which was approved in 1831. Berrima is widely recognised as the best preserved example of a Georgian village on the Australian mainland. A fortunate series of events created the Berrima you see today. 1831 to the 1860s was a time of promise and growth, which came to an abrupt end when the railway bypassed the village in 1867. For the next hundred years there was little or no development in the village. However, this is a wonderful historic town to visit and explore. Visit the website for a list of Heritage sites.

Gibbergunyah Reserve

Natural Attractions

Gibbergunyah Reserve

Gibbergunyah Reserve is one of contrasts with secluded, shady walking trails and sunny, rocky outcrops to picnic on – a calm respite from the hurly-burly of town. At over 800 metres Ninety Acre Hill Lookout has sweeping views of the distant Blue Mountains from its lichen-clad boulders. Wombats and echidnas make their lairs in the crevices of the rocks below. There is a view of Mount Gibraltar from the Gib Lookout. The bushland ranges from open woodland on the drier edges to tall moist fern-carpeted forest in the deeper gullies and is typical of sandstone ridges in the area. A variety of brightly coloured flowers bloom according to the season and tall banksia await fire to open their spiky, rock-hard seed pods. The 200-hectare Reserve which is roughly 1.5 kilometre square links Mittagong and Bowral. It may be entered from either. From Mittagong, the northern access is at the end of Howards Lane, Welby. Access from Bowral is via a walking track beside a fairway of the Gibraltar Bowral Country Club. Trail Maps are located at both entrances. The downloadable map is indicative only, no distances are shown. Maps are also available from the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre.
