Griffith War Memorial Museum

The Griffith War Memorial Museum displays items of military interest and aspects of the social history linked to military operations of ex-servicemen and women and their families from Griffith and districts. At the Museum you will find photos, audio and DVD resource material, stories, clothing, weapons and other military artefacts. The Griffith War Memorial Museum owes its existence to the returned servicemen from WWI who became soldier-settlers in Griffith. They had the foresight to have the Crown Land dedicated as a war memorial. After WWII the returned soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families expressed a wish to establish a fitting memorial to those who served. It has only been possible to establish the museum because of their and their offspring's commitment to remember the sacrifices that were made during the time of war. Upon entering the museum, be greeted by The Girl with Grit Monument - a commemoration of the services given to the nation, region and city of Griffith, by the Australian Women's Land Army.

The Fairey Firefly Fighter Bomber was raised as a memorial to all the men and women of the district who served their country in time of war. The Dethridge Wheel, erected in 1957 by the Griffith Ex-Servicemen's Club, is a memorial to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Pioneers. Dethridge wheels can be seen throughout the M.I.A and their purpose is to register the amount of water that enters each farm. The wheel does not pull water into farms; gravity does that. Burley Griffin Community Gardens

During your visit to Griffith, pack a picnic and take a stroll through the Burley Griffin Community Gardens. Located near the picturesque Main Canal, right next to City Park and the off-leash dog park, the Burley Griffin Community Gardens provides areas for contemplation (beside the canal), for adventure (the cliff face and lookout), for enjoyment of indigenous plant communities and for large outdoor activities and entertainment (the piazza, amphitheatre and stage). Beautiful local indigenous plant communities native to southwestern NSW have been planted to demonstrate plants which need little water to survive. Take time to enjoy the serenity. In his plans for the city, Walter Burly Griffin envisaged parkland along the main irrigation canal, which runs through Griffith. He was responsible for widening the canal and curving it at this point and is believed to have designed the arched bridge at Willandra Avenue. These have become features of the park. A community-inspired feature of the gardens includes the popular "Put your mark in the Park" brick art project which raised funds for the paving of the Piazza. The Piazza or "town square" highlights the Italian influence within our community. The enhancement and linking of green space along the main canal with the city emphasises the importance of water and irrigation as the life blood of this area.

The sculpture depicts the seed cone of the White Cypress Murray Pine, which is widely distributed throughout the region due to its white ant-resistant properties. The timber was used widely by early pioneers and continues to be used today. The seed cone of this tree is symbolic to the development of Griffith, a city established in a semi-arid environment. This modern sculpture has replaced the original monument, which was erected by the Griffith Rotary Club and unveiled by his excellency, The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler on 4th August 1966.

Soldier Settlers Memorial

Soldier Settlers Memorial

When the Great War ended in 1918, many returning troops faced the uncertainty and dangers of coming home to no work or a place to live. Soldier working camps were established in Griffith, where over 1000 ex-servicemen worked to clear virgin scrub and prepare the land to be granted as irrigation farms. The Soldier Settlers Memorial commemorates these soldiers who settled in the district after World War I, as well as the sons of soldier settlers who died in service or were killed in action in World War II. The bronze statue, crafted by Griffith resident Charlie Beltrame, depicts a farmer in remnants of a World War I uniform, with one hand on a plough and the other handing a rifle to his son in World War II uniform, as the latter takes up arms for Australia as his father had before him. The Soldier Settlers Memorial is centrally located in the central business district on Banna Avenue, across from the post office.
