Anlaby

Anlaby is one of Australia's great homesteads and one of the first grand rural properties of South Australia. Settled in 1839 when a flock of 5,000 sheep were walked 1,200 km from Sydney. Anlaby was once one of the most famous pastoral properties in the nation.    The property is being restored to breathe life into the original buildings and gardens that once echoed to the sounds of a prosperous and thriving rural station and community. Explore the Folly and the 10 acre gardens including the 600 roses in the formal rose garden.  Tours of the Anlaby House and Garden are available for groups of 10 or more by prior appointment.  Tours include the principal rooms of the house, servants work rooms, kitchen, scullery and butler's pantry. At the end of the house tour you will have a strong sense of how the family and servants lived and worked. Anlaby is the home of the oldest merino sheep stud in Australia and you are bound to see some of our merino sheep as they graze in the paddocks.  Visit for a guided tour, stay in one of our self-contained cottages or host a unique function or wedding.

Scotty's Grave - Allendale North

The headstone marks the resting place of James (Scotty) Burnett, who tragically drowned while attempting to cross the River Light in August 1846. James was a beloved figure in the District, known for traveling with his horse and cart to trade goods with station workers. He also served as a shepherd on Baker and Newland's station. His popularity and the respect he garnered led to the erection of his tombstone and fence by the station workers. This memorial was initially established after a community appeal in 1885 and has been lovingly restored multiple times since.

Eudunda Railway Station

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Eudunda Railway Station

Eudunda Railway Station, built in 1878, showcases exquisite Victorian railway architecture and once linked Morgan's paddle steamers to Adelaide's ports, underpinning SA Railways' most profitable wool trade. Its distinctive stone design—matched only by Morgan Station—was enlarged three times over 30 years to accommodate booming passenger, stationmaster, and agricultural traffic, driving Eudunda's economic surge, including the state's largest furniture store outside Adelaide. Closed to passengers in 1968 and shuttered to grain traffic by 1994, the station now lies derelict, ravaged by vandalism, termites, and damp. With local townspeople and rail enthusiasts eager, the new owner plans a faithful restoration to preserve this heritage landmark for generations to come.
