Police Heritage Site

Visit the site that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first police officers to die in the line of duty. Police Corporal William Murray Wickham and Mounted Constable John Dunning Carter were travelling to Overland Corner in response to unrest reported in the area. They left Moorundee, near Blanchetown, by horseback, stopping at the riverfront station of J.H. Wigley overnight. The officers, laden with heavy uniform and weapons, made the decision to cross the Murray River in a bark canoe that was understood to be in poor condition. The canoe is believed to have capsized. Only one of the officers could swim. Wickham and Carter drowned on 7 May 1847. The Police Heritage Site in Wigley Flat was opened on Police Foundation Day on 28 April 1997 by Mr M.A. Hyde, Commissioner of Police. The drowning took place 3 kilometres north-east of this site. Directly across the Sturt Highway is a history board describing the incident.

Cobdogla Irrigation And Steam Museum

The Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum was originally built as the pumping station for the district's vineyards and horticultural crops As a major contribution to South Australia's Jubilee 150 year, the then Engineering and Water Supply Department (now SA Water) refurbished one of the world famous Humphrey Pumps and the Pumping Station grounds to form the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum. On the fully accredited railway, both steam and diesel locomotives pull the train on a 30 minute trip through the museum grounds along the channel and out through the vineyards, while elsewhere in the museum you may see huge steam traction engines, smaller steam engines, stationary IC engines, and special displays at work. The museum holds five major operating days each year, featuring the Steam Train Traction Engine, Stationary Engines, the National Trust dioramas, and special operating exhibits. The Humphrey Pump is under repair. Its return to service will be advised on our web and FaceBook sites. Programs available. Please request via email or go to the web page.

1956 Flood Marker

The great flood of 1956 was the worst on record and an event described as 'the greatest catastrophe in the States History' Filling not only the Murray but the Darling too (a rare event). The rivers joined forces at their junction in Wentworth NSW and from there the only way for the water to go is down (through SA). According to Riverland author Graham Irwin in his book 'A brief history of Barmera' at the height of the flood, in late August, the River and Lake Bonney 'merged to form an unbroken sheet of water, stretching from Barmera to Moorook - 17km away. Barmera have a 1956 flood marker on the banks of Lake Bonney.

Anzac Centenary Cross

Landmarks and Buildings

Anzac Centenary Cross

The Anzac Centenary Cross memorial is a project by the Berri Barmera Council in recognition of the Anzac Centenary 2015, commemorating the servicemen and women who served Australia in peace and war and honouring those who paid the supreme sacrifice. The design includes a red gum cross which signifies the river and the communities along the river from which many citizens of our region have served in the 100 years since the first Anzac's. To compliment the cross, is a stylised image of the rising sun. This image has been a common theme to military uniforms and insignia over the century. One unexpected historical coincidence is that the tiles used in the final design orginate in Turkey where the Anzacs landed in Gallipoli in 1915. The foreshore location creates a line of war related memorials within the township, as this Memorial aligns with the Horse Trough memorial and Memorial Gates down the main street of Barmera.

Loveday

Loveday was known for its internment camp during World War 2. The camp was established in 1941 (and was one of the largest in Australia) with an impressive collection of recorded interviews, live footage, photos and artifacts a display inside the Barmera Visitor Information Centre. By late 1943 all of the internees had been transferred to camp 14 and the other camps were closed down. Most of the buildings were dismantled and auctioned off. Looking out across the area now, there is virtually no sign that this little known chapter of SA History ever occurred.
