Boranup Forest Drive

Boranup Forest lies between Caves Road and the coast, and creates a powerful contrast with the rest of the coastline. Boranup Drive, suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles, winds through the Boranup Forest past Boranup Campground and Boranup Lookout, which gives sweeping views over the forest and the coast west to Hamelin Bay. The Boranup Forest, and a few other areas around Augusta and Margaret River, is the westernmost place that the karri trees grow. The forest is particularly picturesque in the golden light of late afternoon. In spring white clematis, purple hovea, yellow hibbertia, and coral creepers add vivid colours to the cool green of the forest.

Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park

Load up the car, choose your playlist and head d'outh to the south west corner of the state to see why this park is one of Western Australia's favourite holiday destinations. Spend at least one day here and you'll have outstanding memories that will last a lifetime. You can drive or walk one of the many trails through tall green forests all the way to the stunning coastline. In the late afternoon see why we all say 'west is best' and drive to the coast to catch the sun setting over the Indian Ocean. Leap out of your comfort zone and explore one of the many underground limestone caves or catch a gnarly wave at one of the well-known surf breaks. There's plenty of wildlife to see such as sting rays close to shore, dolphins, whales, kangaroos, possums, quendas and reptiles.

Lake Cave

Lake Cave is a stunning pristine chamber deep beneath the earth. Visitors descend a staircase in time through a spectacular sinkhole, gazing up at the towering karri trees from the floor of the sunken forest. Inside the cave, a tranquil lake reflects the delicate crystal formations that grow from the cave roof. Droplets hang from the tips of straws and stalactites – before dropping to the cave floor or into the lake, creating ripples in the water. Visitors marvel at the unique 'Suspended Table' formation, which weighs several tonnes and seems to defy gravity as it hovers above the clear lake water. As the guide changes the lighting to highlight various unique features of the cave, incredible views and silhouettes are etched in the darkness.

Conto's Beach

The realisation of the remote is inescapable at Conto's Beach. It isn't just that the drive down from Caves Road is long – a few kilometres of rutted orange gravel road flanked by banksia and bush. It's in the largesse of cliffs that pale boulders on the shore into insignificance. The persistence of waves that carve slopes into white sand. The complete dearth of people means finding an isolated spot on the long stretch of the crescent moon coast is no real challenge at all. Unlike some other remote coastal access spots, Conto's is accessible to all vehicles. A walking trail loop that begins at Conto's car park takes in a vivid section of the Cape to Cape track: swimming in summer is a pleasure, but hiking in the cooler months is equally as connective to the landscape. A small point break attracts surfers less fixated on high-performance waves. Rockpools for exploring and rock formations for clambering offer kids at least as much entertainment as the traditional bucket and spade.

The stunning undulating terrain and exclusive bays offer an interesting backdrop with a safe surfing beach suited to beginners and experts alike. There is a bit of walking along soft sand to get to the more popular bays, so don’t pack too much beach gear! If you can time your visit to the beach on a calm day you will be able to see the wreck lying in five metres of water off the coast. Visit the Grace Bussell Memorial Plaque to learn all about the heroic rescue of most of the ship’s inhabitants that took place. Cosy Corner

The beach at Cosy Corner is generally sheltered and suitable for swimming. The limestone platform on the beach to the south of the parking area contains many blowholes that spurt water up to 6m high on rough days. Islands offshore are surrounded by stunning reefs and drop-offs that are home to a myriad of colourful marine animals, including the giant blue groper. It is a perfect place for diving if you pick your weather conditions and are prepared to lug heavy scuba equipment down the steep path. Cosy Corner is popular with both beach and rock fishers but please be mindful of your personal safety. Rugged swells in this area occasionally wash fishers from rocks resulting in fatalities. Always wear a personal flotation device when fishing from rocks and never fish alone. Cosy Corner is in a special purpose zone of the Ngari Capes Marine Park which allows for shore-based line fishing only. All other fishing is prohibited, including spearfishing, boat fishing, octopus potting or trapping. Be aware of daily bag limits, minimum legal sizes and other regulations.

Caves Road

Caves Road stretches between two capes – Cape Naturaliste to the north and Cape Leeuwin to the south, running parallel to the coast but set inland. A drive along Caves Road is all about appreciating sweeping vineyards, happy livestock and locally-grown produce. Jarrah, Karris and Marris get thicker and taller as you head south. You can see the geography and the colours changing and open paddocks of gold and green are replaced by the dense browns and deep greens of the Karri trees. Look closely and the drive will reveal the region's sensitivity around sustainable land care. Vineyards are prolific, olive groves weave in and out of view, solar passive roofs and rammed earth structures can be counted along the way, and walls built by local stonemasons lead into winery entrances. Rounding the bend in Caves Road, just south of the Conto Road exit, are towering trees so impressive and powerful, that it is best to pull over to the side of the road to stop, listen, breathe, and grab a photo or two. Caves Road is a magical drive!
