Billabong Parklands Artworks

Artists Milne and Stonehouse worked with the Council and the local Aboriginal community to develop a vision for the Billabong Parklands. The artworks at the Billabong Parklands were developed in consultation with key Aboriginal stakeholders, Yirran Miigaydhu Weavers Group and artists Danielle Mate and Maddison Gibbs. The bridge acts as a symbolic connection at the heart of the landscape and draws on the notion of ‘the land between two rivers’, representing Campbelltown’s place between the Georges River and Nepean River. The entry sign reads: Njirgangga dharidhamayi Dharawal nguradha (You are standing on Dharawal Country). The centric circles on the entry artwork represent the Campbelltown community while the Lyrebird footprints reference the totem animal of the Dharawal people.

Campbelltown Community Labyrinth

In a first for the Macarthur area, a community labyrinth has opened in Campbelltown’s Hurley Park. It is a unique tourist attraction and walking space. Visitors can use this as a meeting place, enjoy peaceful reflection and escape from the pressures of daily life. Campbelltown’s community labyrinth is made from brick in a classical seven circuit Cretan design. Variations of this design can seen across Europe and Scandinavia. Labyrinths are not mazes and consist of a pathway built on the ground. They feature a journey to the centre and back for quiet reflection and to exercise the right side of the brain. Mazes, which have walls are more of a puzzle, that you can't see out of. The perimeter contains 270 ceramic tiles, the labyrinth has a  14 metre diameter. It has a larger centre to allow people to gather together and it is a place for contemplatation. With seating for people to relax, a tree for shade, and information sign giving a brief explanation of how to use the labyrinth.

Japanese Gardens at Campbelltown Arts Centre

The Japanese Gardens are a special gift from Koshigaya, Campbelltown's Sister City in Japan, and are located on the grounds of the Campbelltown Arts Centre. The Campbelltown Japanese Gardens celebrate the sister city relationship between Campbelltown and Koshigaya. Citizens from Koshigaya presented Campbelltown with the Japanese Gardens on the 10th of April 1988.  The Gardens symbolise the beliefs and religion of both Shinto, the Indigenous religion of Japan, and Zen Buddhism. The Campbelltown Japanese Gardens feature a traditional waterfall, koi pond, timber bridge, stonework pathways, lush plantings and a 16th Century designed teahouse, handcrafted by Japanese craftsmen. The aim of the garden is to obtain quiet solitude. The design represents elegant simplicity, lending itself to contemplation and heightened awareness. The Gardens is also home to the Art Cafe, a scenic dining location that overlooks the tranquil gardens.

Dyalgala Ngurra

Landmarks and Buildings

Dyalgala Ngurra (Dyalgala-ma Ngura-dha) /Embrace Country

Dyalgala Ngurra (Dyalgala-ma Ngura-dha) / Embrace Country is a striking public artwork created by Jason Wing and Maddison Gibbs, beautifully situated among the native flora and fauna at Smith’s Creek Reserve on Dharawal Country. The installation encircles four massive, abandoned pipes that fortuitously form a gateway to the Reserve. This collaborative project involved preschoolers and First Nations youth from the Campbelltown community, who participated in workshops to express the importance of traditional and ongoing Custodianship of Country. The artwork highlights endangered species native to the area, such as the Garilwa (Gah-rill-wah) / Koala, Gardai (Gah-die) / Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo, Djunidjunudj (joon-idge-ee-noodge oo) / Powerful Owl, and jindoola (Gin-doo-lah) / Lace Monitor. Commissioned by Campbelltown City Council in 2024, this initiative was made possible through partnerships with Natural Areas, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Leaping Learners, Clontarf, and NASCA, and received funding from the NSW Government's Places to Roam program.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Campbelltown Cattle Tank and Reservoir

The Campbelltown Reservoir and cattle tank were constructed in Allman Street in 1838 using convict labour.  The reservoir provided the town with water from 1840 to 1889, solving Campbelltown's unreliable water supply problems. It continued to be used for recreational purposes, including a huge regatta in 1917. Unfortunately, the cattle tank became polluted and was the scene of two drowning fatalities in the 1920s and 1930s. The water had disappeared in the early 1960s after the topography of the land changed from nearby earthworks. The cattle tank and reservoir are both heritage-listed and are believed to be the last convict-built constructions in Campbelltown.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Quondong Cottage

St Patrick's [Quondong Cottage] was the first catholic school in Australia built from private subscription. The Catholic Church acquired the land from Mary Shiel. The building originally had a gabled hall of plastered brick. The veranda across the front was added later, as were the urns on the round-topped pilaster-buttresses. It was built in 1840 and opened on St Patrick's Day. It remained in use as a school until 1914 when Father James Dunne opened St John's Primary School in Lindsay Street. It was then sold to Mrs Keihone who had it converted to a dwelling, and wishing to give it a truly Australian title, renamed it Quondong. It was named after a Kurrajong tree at the front which was mistakenly believed to be a native Quandong tree. Mrs Keihone sold it to her nephew William Thomas Bourke who resided there till the 1950's, after which, Cyril Segal of Wilton owned it till 1991. The building is now owned by Campbelltown Catholic Club.

Dredge's Cottage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Dredge's Cottage

Dredge's Cottage, formerly known as Fowler's Cottage, exemplifies late nineteenth-century Victorian architecture infused with colonial influences. Since 1987, it has served as the Veteran's Recreation Centre, the only facility of its kind in Australia. The grounds feature a memorial wall honoring local servicemen who lost their lives in the World Wars, while a lone Aleppo pine, planted by Vice-Consul Cafe Asik and Federal MP Russell Matheson, commemorates the centenary of the Battle of Lone Pine. Although previously thought to date from around 1890, evidence suggests it may have been built in the 1870s, showcasing a vernacular style akin to early Georgian cottages. The traditional four-room layout, along with a separate weatherboard kitchen wing, supports this earlier dating, while the Gothic-inspired verandah reflects the architectural trends of the 1870s. As the last remaining cottage on Queen Street, Fowler's Cottage stands as a testament to Campbelltown's rural heritage and is linked to notable early business figures like Daniel Fowler and the Bursill family. It is part of the significant Queen Street group, a remarkable collection of Georgian buildings that may be unique in New South Wales. Located in the heart of Campbelltown and is featured on the self-guided Campbelltown Heritage and Cultural Walk.
