Shimmer Lynda Draper

Landmarks and Buildings

Shimmer by Lynda Draper

Lynda Draper is a significant figure in the Australian creative landscape. A much-loved contemporary artist based on the South Coast of New South Wales on Dharawal Country, Draper is celebrated for her distinctive ceramic works and her lifelong dedication to arts education. Draper's art practice navigates the space between dreams and reality, creating works that evoke wonder and invite viewers into fantastical, otherworldly realms. With a rare and masterful sensitivity to form, materiality, and tactility, Draper's approach is deeply intuitive—her creations evolving organically through the process of making. While best known for her work in ceramics, Draper has recently been expanding her practice to include studio glass. This new direction began during her 2024 artist residency at Canberra Glassworks, where she explored the unique properties and challenges of the material. Shimmer is the result of this experimentation. A floor-based public artwork, it comprises seventeen custom-coloured, shaped, textured, and illuminated glass puddles. The installation responds directly to its site—each element arranged in person by Draper with the aim of appearing as if gently scattered, as though by magic, across the urban pavement. Despite the planning and craftsmanship involved, the work maintains an effortless sense of balance and spontaneity. Shimmer offers a moment of quiet magic in the heart of the Campbelltown Central Business District—glowing softly, shifting slightly, and gently illuminating the street it now inhabits.

A celebration of Campbelltown’s thriving Pacific community, and the extensive connections between people, plants, animals and all living things. A bold, collaborative public artwork created by award-winning artists and designers Victoria Garcia and Bayvick Lawrance. The work is an ambitious intersection of two artists, two cultures, two buildings and two creative disciplines, brought together by the concept of ‘high fashion meets street art’. The work subtly changes with the movement of light: mornings conjure a shimmering lace underwater effect, and the afternoon light enflames the rainbow sequins. St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish

Landmarks and Buildings

St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish

St John the Evangelist Parish is a welcoming community of brothers and sisters in Christ and strives to be a safe community. The original church, St Johns Catholic Church, was designed and built by Father John Therry in 1826. It was located on the hill overlooking Campbelltown and the scenic hills, land donated by James Burke (Bourke). A Cemetery was located next to the church. The first burials were in 1827. The hilltop cemetery got its most famous burial in 1837 when James Ruse — Australia's first farmer — died. His headstone noted he "sow'd the first grain". In the 1880's it was found that a new church was required. The foundation stone for St John the Evangelist Catholic Church was laid and blessed by Cardinal Moran on June 14, 1886. Further additions, new porches, transepts, and stained glass were added to St John the Evangelist Catholic Church to increase the seating capacity of the church and were opened and blessed by Bishop Thomas McCabe on 15 March 1964. At the doors, you will be welcomed by friendly people from different countries and backgrounds. It is a place where you can find a sense of purpose and belonging. Come and see for yourself.

Town Hall Theatre Campbelltown

The Town Hall Theatre is a treasured historic building. Located on the southern end of Queen Street and only a short walk from the Arts Centre precinct. The Campbelltown Theatre Group have been using the theatre since 1980. Wowing audiences with multiple sell-out productions every year. The current Town Hall Theatre occupies two heritage buildings. The north side building was the original Town Hall, while the adjoining building was the original Fire Station. The "Sons of Temperance” built the original Town Hall in 1862. A few years later, in 1884, it was bought by Campbelltown Council for the sum of £800. The Town Hall was abuzz in the early 1900s when it was hired to screen silent movies in the evenings. Visitors beware, did you know the theatre is haunted by Fred Fisher's ghost? Fred's demise in 1826 has been made famous through the Legend of Fisher’s Ghost stories. George Worrall was executed for the murder of Fred Fisher. George rented the land on which these buildings stand. Frederick Fisher was living in Mr Worrell’s house at the time of his murder. Dredge's Cottage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Dredge's Cottage

Dredge's Cottage, formerly known as Fowler's Cottage, exemplifies late nineteenth-century Victorian architecture infused with colonial influences. Since 1987, it has served as the Veteran's Recreation Centre, the only facility of its kind in Australia. The grounds feature a memorial wall honoring local servicemen who lost their lives in the World Wars, while a lone Aleppo pine, planted by Vice-Consul Cafe Asik and Federal MP Russell Matheson, commemorates the centenary of the Battle of Lone Pine. Although previously thought to date from around 1890, evidence suggests it may have been built in the 1870s, showcasing a vernacular style akin to early Georgian cottages. The traditional four-room layout, along with a separate weatherboard kitchen wing, supports this earlier dating, while the Gothic-inspired verandah reflects the architectural trends of the 1870s. As the last remaining cottage on Queen Street, Fowler's Cottage stands as a testament to Campbelltown's rural heritage and is linked to notable early business figures like Daniel Fowler and the Bursill family. It is part of the significant Queen Street group, a remarkable collection of Georgian buildings that may be unique in New South Wales. Located in the heart of Campbelltown and is featured on the self-guided Campbelltown Heritage and Cultural Walk.

Campbelltown Cattle Tank and Reservoir Plaque

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Campbelltown Cattle Tank and Reservoir

The Campbelltown Reservoir and cattle tank were constructed in Allman Street in 1838 using convict labour.  The reservoir provided the town with water from 1840 to 1889, solving Campbelltown's unreliable water supply problems. It continued to be used for recreational purposes, including a huge regatta in 1917. Unfortunately, the cattle tank became polluted and was the scene of two drowning fatalities in the 1920s and 1930s. The water had disappeared in the early 1960s after the topography of the land changed from nearby earthworks. The cattle tank and reservoir are both heritage-listed and are believed to be the last convict-built constructions in Campbelltown.
