Caves Road

Caves Road stretches between two capes – Cape Naturaliste to the north and Cape Leeuwin to the south, running parallel to the coast but set inland. A drive along Caves Road is all about appreciating sweeping vineyards, happy livestock and locally-grown produce. Jarrah, Karris and Marris get thicker and taller as you head south. You can see the geography and the colours changing and open paddocks of gold and green are replaced by the dense browns and deep greens of the Karri trees. Look closely and the drive will reveal the region's sensitivity around sustainable land care. Vineyards are prolific, olive groves weave in and out of view, solar passive roofs and rammed earth structures can be counted along the way, and walls built by local stonemasons lead into winery entrances. Rounding the bend in Caves Road, just south of the Conto Road exit, are towering trees so impressive and powerful, that it is best to pull over to the side of the road to stop, listen, breathe, and grab a photo or two. Caves Road is a magical drive!

Surfers Point

Surfers Point is known as one of the best ‘big wave’ locations on the planet – on par with Hawaii. Between March and April it hosts in the Margaret River Pro World Championships, where you can watch the world’s top surfers pit their skills on the barrels and big peaks (some reaching over 12 feet). From Margaret River, it’s just a ten-minute drive west to Surfers Point, in Prevelly, or three hours and 30 minutes from Perth. You can even take in this dramatic coastline one step at a time by joining the Cape to Cape Track. The 135-kilometre trail leads you through karri forests, wildflowers and rugged headlands to sandy beaches and enchanting caves. For surfers, the Mainbreak at Surfers Point is the big drawcard. Try the powerful lefts and rights at Southsides, the thick hollow wave known as The Box, or catch the big tow-in wave – the Bombie. If you’d prefer to watch the action from dry land, there are plenty of vantage points with sweeping views of the breaks. This makes it a good rest stop on the Cape to Cape Track, or a great spot to grab breakfast before a day exploring Margaret River’s wineries.

Natural Attractions

Margaret River Mouth Beach

There is a sculptural quality to the River Mouth landscape. This topography moves. As the Margaret River level rises and falls with the movement of seasons and changes in the volumes of water flowing from the catchment some 60 kilometres upriver, her banks expand and contract, shaping the surrounding sand banks and altering her course as she spills into the ocean at River Mouth Beach. The river has a calm, brackish quality at odds with the wild, salt-pound of waves dumping on the shore. It's a contrast played out by the people who come here. Young kids on boogie boards padling the river. Young guns on short boards race the wave face as it curls toward rock and shore. Around the closest point, rockpools call to young explorers, looked over by Layla–Russell Sheridan's vivid sculpture of a woman breastfeeding a baby whale. At the other end of the beach toward Cape Mentelle, day trekkers completing a section of the Cape to Cape track descend to soft sand and a river crossing for the day's final push.

Gnarabup Beach

Gnarabup Beach is the longest and most popular swimming beach in Prevelly. Connection to community is the human attraction of Gnarabup Beach. There is a jetty for fishing and boat launching, a pontoon in summer, and dog walking along the cliff trail. Join in the daily meeting of ocean swimmers at resident White Elephant Beach Café all year round. Environmentally, this same sense of inclusivity is realised by ocean waters so blue and (mostly) calm that it sometimes feels like a dip, here, is an experience of the world's largest swimming pool. An outer reef breaks the force of the swell. The inlet cradled between Marmaduke Point and the jetty is an ocean lover's nursery. This is the site of children's summer ocean swim classes, after-school jetty jumps, and mid-morning coffees with vivid ocean views.

Ellensbrook at Mokidup on Wadandi Noongar Country

Ellensbrook at Mokidup is nestled in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park in the lee of one of the most spectacular coastal dunes of the rugged, western-facing coastline of Wadandi Country. Mokidup has been a camping spot for the Wadandi for many thousands of years. The high sand dunes served as a vantage point for communication, a lookout for schooling fish and later, to scan the ocean for djanga (white spirits) on their ships. In 1857, Ellen and Alfred Bussell chose this as the location of their new home ‘Ellensbrook’. Ellen described it as “pretty hilly country by the sea where there is health in the breeze”. The Wadandi and the Bussell families had a joint appreciation for this landscape. Today, the shared stories of this place are told in collaboration with Wadandi Traditional Custodians. There was also a shared connection among women of both cultures, who played a major role in shaping this place. The waterfall and cave above the property are called Meekadariby and are very significant, particularly to Wadandi women. Ellen’s daughters, Fanny and Edith, lived here and managed the farm. From 1898 to 1917, Edith ran the ‘Ellensbrook Farm Home’ for Aboriginal children. Today, Wadandi artist Sandra Hill’s beautiful artworks greet visitors to the site. Ellensbrook at Mokidup is a registered Aboriginal heritage site and listed on Western Australia’s Register of Heritage Places.

Cape Grace Wines

Cape Grace Wines is one of the great little wineries of Margaret River. Family-owned and operated, located a stone's throw from the stars of the Wilyabrup Valley, lies Cape Grace's carefully tended vineyard, planted by Robert and Karen Karri-Davies in 1996. Small batch hand-crafted wines are made on-site, with all red wines hand-plunged and basket pressed. The cellar door is open daily, and you can meet Karen or one of the team and get some insights into the joys of being a small winemaker! Before entering the tasting room, enter through the wine storage area, which displays a selection of Robert's photographs and cameras. Annual production is 1500 dozen cases, and the wines include a dry Chenin Blanc, wood-aged Chardonnay, Cremant de Grace Sparkling Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Shiraz, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cane Cut Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine. Being a small producer the majority of wines are sold at the cellar door and website. During vintage, you may see some fermenting-action in the winery. If time is available you can tour the winery and get the wine-making process explained. Outside and adjacent to the cellar door is Robert's private collection of Australian parrots in a natural bush setting. The Great Egret, an occasional visitor to the dam, is featured on all Cape Grace Wines labels.
