You just wouldn't know you were in the midst of a major city at Girrahween picnic area. This sheltered and secluded spot is perfect for a relaxed family picnic or a game of chase among the big eucalypts. Located by an access point to the Two Valley trail, Girrahween makes a great starting or finishing point to a bush or birdwatching walk - it's lovely and cool under the trees.
Wolli Creek Regional Park is a long sliver of greenery in Sydney's urban inner southwest; a beautiful gem in the suburbs.
It's an important place for the local community and the Wolli Creek Preservation Society continues to play an active role in bush regeneration activities. The park conserves a richly varied vegetation corridor along Wolli Creek, providing a home for an astonishing array of birdlife and grey headed flying foxes.
It's a great place for a morning walk along the Wolli Creek track, part of the longer Two Valley trail via Campsie and Bexley. If you're looking for a new barbecue spot, try Girrahween picnic area or the nearby Turella Reserve.
Wolli Creek walking track is a two kilometre section of the Two Valley trail, linking Campsie to Bexley North via a riverside trail that passes through Canterbury, Undercliffe and Bardwell Park. The park is a very special area, forming a vital vegetation corridor that assists native plants to survive because of its dense bush habitat for the insects and birds that pollinate the plants.
If you live in the local area, this short track is great for a brisk morning walk. Early morning and dusk are good times to spot the local wildlife; look for Australian pelicans hunting for fish, egrets with their long necks and tawny frogmouths camouflaged in the trees.
If you don’t live in the area, you can easily access this peaceful walk from one of the train stations along the route, including Turella, Bardwell Park, and Bexley North. The longer Two Valley trail can be accessed from a number of points along its 13 kilometres.
Offering live music every night of the week, alongside a lengthy cocktail list, local microbrews and wines from around the globe, Lazybones Lounge has fast become a staple of the Inner West suburb of Marrickville. The gigs are primarily of the jazz variety and free most nights – and when there is an entrance fee, the cover will only set you back about ten dollars.
The décor is cosy and quirky: velvet curtains, huge leather sofas, retro bar stools, grand chandeliers, old TV sets, vintage lamps and pot plants. There is even a Hare Krishna mural decorating one wall.
To eat, there's an ever-evolving menu of street food-style snacks, from spiced lamb curry to pizzas and hot dogs.
Be sure to drop in some coin to the donation bowl to help support the musicians who perform on your way.
