Brett Whiteley Studio

Brett Whiteley Studio has reopened after extensive upgrades to revitalise and preserve the site for generations to come. Explore one of Sydney's best kept secrets: the Brett Whiteley Studio, where one of Australia's most celebrated artists of the 20th century lived and worked from 1988 to 1992. The Studio exhibits a selection of Whiteley's work where glimpses of his private world can be seen in his sketchbooks, photographs, music collection and personal memorabilia. The studio is located close to the Central Business District, in the cosmopolitan suburb of Surry Hills. Brett Whiteley (1939–92) bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 until 1992, when he died in Thirroul, south of Sydney. The studio has been managed as a museum by the Art Gallery of New South Wales since 1995. Visitors are offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images. The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks.

New work and new stories sit at the centre of Belvoir’s programming, alongside a mix of classics and international writing, and a lasting commitment to Indigenous stories. Hordern Pavilion

The Hordern Pavilion, simply known as The Hordern to locals, has hosted everything from up-and-coming bands to music festivals and fashion runway shows to the epic Mardi Gras Party. Built in 1924 by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, it was originally used as exhibition space for the Royal Easter Show when it was based at Moore Park. It’s all that big, open space that makes it a fantastic venue. It can be left bare for a dance party, put in rows of chairs for a seated concert or install seating around the edges and leave the middle empty for a mosh pit. One of its big drawcards is the location. Right next to the Entertainment Quarter, it’s easy to park or it’s just a short stroll from Central Station if coming via public transport.

Harrington Street Gallery

In 1973, the John Ogburn Club proposed that the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority consider making a space in the Old Evans Store on 36 Harrington Street, The Rocks into a gallery which would allow young and developing artists exhibit their work. It first exhibited paintings from 1973 and then in 1986 it moved to 17 Meagher Street, Chippendale. The idea of establishing a registered artists’ cooperative was the inspiration from the artist John Ogburn.

White Rabbit Gallery

The White Rabbit Gallery was opened in 2009 to showcase what has become one of the world's most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art. Dedicated to works made in the 21st century, the White Rabbit Collection is owned by Judith Neilson, who was inspired to establish it after her first trips to Beijing in the late 1990s. She was thrilled by the creative energy and technical quality of the works she saw and wanted to share them with people outside China. She makes regular trips to China and Taiwan to augment the Collection, which now includes over 3000 works by more than 800 artists and continues to expand. The gallery building, a Rolls-Royce service depot in the 1940s, was completely refitted as an exhibition space by architect William Smart. Since the Gallery can house only a fraction of the collection at any one time, there are two new exhibitions a year, each involving a full rehang. For this reason, the Gallery closes during installations, usually in February and August. The White Rabbit Gallery is a registered charitable institution funded solely by Judith Neilson. Admission is free.
