Harrington Street Gallery

In 1973, the John Ogburn Club proposed that the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority consider making a space in the Old Evans Store on 36 Harrington Street, The Rocks into a gallery which would allow young and developing artists exhibit their work. It first exhibited paintings from 1973 and then in 1986 it moved to 17 Meagher Street, Chippendale. The idea of establishing a registered artists’ cooperative was the inspiration from the artist John Ogburn.

Belvoir St Theatre

Based in Surry Hills, Sydney, Belvoir is one of Australia’s most distinguished and beloved theatre companies. Since 1984, when a group of 600 likeminded theatre-lovers came together to buy a theatre to save it from becoming an apartment block, Belvoir has been at the forefront of Australian story telling for the stage. Each year the company presents an annual season of shows for this now-iconic corner stage. New work and new stories sit at the centre of Belvoir’s programming, alongside a mix of classics and international writing, and a lasting commitment to Indigenous stories. In short, Belvoir is about modern theatricality, an open society, and faith in humanity. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Eamon Flack and Executive Director Aaron Beach, Belvoir engages Australia’s most prominent and promising theatre-makers. Belvoir has nurtured the talents of artists including Cate Blanchett, Leah Purcell, Tommy Murphy, Kate Mulvany, Simon Stone, Anne-Louise Sarks, Wesley Enoch, S. Shakthidharan, and former Belvoir Artistic Director Neil Armfield. Landmark productions include Counting and Cracking, Barbara and the Camp Dogs, Cloudstreet, The Drover’s Wife, The Glass Menagerie, Angels in America, The Wild Duck, Keating!, The Sapphires, and many, many more. Belvoir regularly tours productions nationally and internationally.

Prince Alfred Park

Prince Alfred Park borders the eastern side of Central Station, in the lively suburb of Surry Hills. This space has undergone many transformations over the centuries - most recently, an 18-million-dollar redevelopment completed in 2013. Now, Prince Alfred Park encompasses 7.5 hectares of green space in inner Sydney, complete with state-of-the-art facilities. One of the park’s most popular new features is a 50 metre heated outdoor pool—the first swimming pool of its kind in Sydney. Prince Alfred Park also boasts five tennis courts, two basketball courts and several fitness stations. There are plenty of benches to sit and relax, a large grassy area where dogs can play off leash and new barbecue facilities with custom-designed tables and seating. With a focus on sustainability, the park’s recent transformation has welcomed hundreds of native plant species, solar lighting, and a 250,000 litre storm water tank which supplies 95 per cent of the park's water needs. Catch a bus or train to Central Station today and discover the new face of Prince Alfred Park.

White Rabbit Gallery

The White Rabbit Gallery was opened in 2009 to showcase what has become one of the world's most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art. Dedicated to works made in the 21st century, the White Rabbit Collection is owned by Judith Neilson, who was inspired to establish it after her first trips to Beijing in the late 1990s. She was thrilled by the creative energy and technical quality of the works she saw and wanted to share them with people outside China. She makes regular trips to China and Taiwan to augment the Collection, which now includes over 3000 works by more than 800 artists and continues to expand. The gallery building, a Rolls-Royce service depot in the 1940s, was completely refitted as an exhibition space by architect William Smart. Since the Gallery can house only a fraction of the collection at any one time, there are two new exhibitions a year, each involving a full rehang. For this reason, the Gallery closes during installations, usually in February and August. The White Rabbit Gallery is a registered charitable institution funded solely by Judith Neilson. Admission is free.

The Lansdowne Hotel

The Lansdowne Hotel has been rocking this corner of the inner city since the 1930s, until it shut in 2015. The duo behind Mary's, the hip Newtown burger bar, reopened it in 2017 and reclaimed the popular rock n' roll live music venue. It's not gentrification, but rather a revamp. Pub fare has been swapped for American deep-dish pan pizza as well as those burgers, so it's still junk food but done to a high standard. But what people come here for is the live music. There's a small dance floor complete with disco ball downstairs while upstairs is home to space that can fit 250 frantically-moshing fans and hosts everything from record label launch parties to solo acts and band tours. Tickets are affordable, with the majority hovering around 30 dollars and under.
