A view of the Memorial in Hyde Park South

Galleries, Museums and Collections

The Anzac Memorial

The Anzac Memorial, in Sydney's Hyde Park, is New South Wales' principal memorial to all Australians who have served in the Defence Force. The Memorial Building in both its original and its extended form is a work of art and a remarkable piece of architecture. It is a physical expression of the spirit and legend of the Anzacs and a place of comfort for those who have lost loved ones. Exhibition and interpretation spaces allow the Anzac Memorial to illustrate the evolution of Australian military service while focusing on NSW stories. The detailed storytelling within the Centenary Exhibition Gallery complements the quiet spaces and symbols of the original Memorial building.

Yininmadyemi Thou Didst Let Fall

Landmarks and Buildings

Yininmadyemi Thou Didst Let Fall

Yininmadyemi Thou Didst Let Fall is a significant new sculptural artwork by Aboriginal artist Tony Albert to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who served in the nation’s military. The artwork is composed of four standing bullets and three fallen shells. The bullet is a universal signifier for conflict. The arrangement of the bullets, with some standing and some fallen, represents those who survived and those who were sacrificed. The artwork also references the circumstances faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women when they returned to Australia. They were treated differently from their white Australian comrades who were given land for their service while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were still having their land taken away. Hyde Park South has been chosen as the location for the artwork due to its status and historical significance. The site was once a ritual contest ground, a crossroads for traditional walking trails, and an important site for ceremony, gathering and camping. It is also home to the ANZAC Memorial.

St Mary's Cathedral is the spiritual home of Sydney's Catholic community. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney and stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the Gothic Revival style of its architecture pays respect to the great medieval cathedrals of Europe. The first stage of the cathedral, the northern section, was built between 1866 and 1900. Stage two, the southern section, was completed between 1912 and 1928. Entry to St Mary's Cathedral is free and open to the public. However, a donation towards the upkeep and cleaning of the Cathedral is greatly appreciated. St Mary's Cathedral offers free guided tours every Sunday at 2 p.m. This tour meets at the cathedral shop. It is important to remember St Mary's Cathedral is a place of worship.
