Old Police Station and Courthouse Museum

The Clare Branch of the National Trust SA opened its Museum in September 1970. It is housed in an attractive stone and brick building on the edge of town, which was Clare's first Police Station and Court House - built in 1850. Surprisingly, the building was later used as a Casualty Hospital until the Clare Hospital was opened in the mid 1920's. The Museum houses a broad collection of objects donated by individuals and families which have a strong connection to the local community ranging from costumes, homewares, and commercial items to agricultural equipment. It illustrates through these objects how people lived and worked from the 19th Century onwards. Special displays on particular subjects are rotated, often to coincide with events such as Anzac Day and sporting events. The Museum is opened for groups, school children and individuals outside its regular open hours, by appointment. It is also a Learning Destination for the Australian Children's University Adelaide

John Horrocks Cottage

John Horrocks Cottage, located in Penwortham within the Clare Valley of South Australia, is a historically significant structure constructed in 1839 by the pioneering explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks. As one of the earliest European settlers in the region, Horrocks played a vital role in the development of the area. He established and named the village of Penwortham, drawing inspiration from his hometown in Lancashire, England. The cottage holds the distinction of being the oldest stone building situated north of Gawler. It has undergone recent restoration efforts to preserve its original architectural features, ensuring that its historical integrity remains intact. The restoration process aimed to maintain the building's authenticity, providing visitors with an experience that closely resembles its original state. Adjacent to the main cottage is a meticulously restored stone outbuilding. This auxiliary structure houses a curated collection of photographs and literature that document the history of the cottage and the surrounding region. These exhibits serve to educate visitors about the local heritage and the pioneering history associated with the site. The property is accessible to the public on the first Sunday of each month, with additional viewing arrangements available by appointment. This schedule allows for controlled access, ensuring the preservation of the site while providing educational opportunities for visitors interested in South Australia's early colonial history.

With over 500 species and around 1000 plants, many rare in cultivation, a couple of hours is needed for you to get full enjoyment from this latest attraction in Blyth. Most species are different to those at The Terrace Garden at 35 South Terrace, so bring your lunch or take a break at Blyth Cafe (open Mon - Sat) between gardens. Both are at their best May - November. In winter and spring the walk has wide views across the Blyth Plains to the Clare Hills and Hummocks Ranges. Since closing in 1966, it has been resold several times and partly demolished, but the present owners have committed themselves to ensuring it remains an asset for Blyth and many hours have been spent restoring it to its present use. The steeple built in 1889 remains the focal point of the church, and adds character and charm to its use as a gallery.

The Terrace Garden is newly established Blyth, with plantings commencing in 2020. In 2026 the garden holds around 1800 plants of approximately 800 species. While Eremophilas are the dominant species, many other Australian Genera are represented, including Eucalypts, Grevillea, Banksia, Myoporum, Thryptomene, Hakea, Alyogne, Correa, Melaleuca, Chamalaucium. Visitors are encouraged to take cuttings where plants are sufficiently mature, or visit Medika Gallery in Blyth to possibly purchase species of interest (Ian Roberts has grown & supplied all plants in the garden). Around 230 species have nameplates. While the best time to visit for maximum flowering is Aug-Nov, some plants can be found in flower throughout the year. This garden is something of a trial for waterwise plants as no reticulated water is available on site, and to see which plants hold a good longer-term shape for garden propagation.
