Sub Base Platypus

Looking for things to do in North Sydney? Sub Base Platypus is an ideal setting for rest and recreation. Formerly a torpedo factory, submarine base and gasworks, Sub Base Platypus is a community recreation and work hub in North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal People. Featuring a shaded BBQ area with seating, a pocket playground and a scenic waterfront promenade, Sub Base Platypus is a place where visitors can relax on the waterfront with friends and family. Did you know? Despite its name, Sub Base Platypus isn't home to any platypuses! It's believed the Royal Australian Navy chose the name HMAS Platypus due to the similarities between the duck-billed monotreme and submarines. Platypuses use electro receptors in their bills to locate food underwater just as submarines use sonar to detect objects. In 2017, the Harbour Trust rechristened the site Sub Base Platypus. Military relics at Bradleys Head

Military relics at Bradleys Head

Bradleys Head is another place where military history and stunning landscapes combine to offer a complete harbour experience. Just next to Taronga Zoo, the convict-built battery at Bradleys Head was built after four American warships arrived in Sydney Harbour undetected in 1839. Sydneysiders were feeling uneasy so a circular parapet was later installed to enhance Sydney's protection. Today, the mast of HMAS Sydney (I) towers over the parapet as a striking monument to the WWI warship. Defence ditches, added in the late 19th century after British troops left Sydney and remnants of earlier fortications are other features of this unique harbourside location.

Bradleys Head Naval Memorial

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Bradleys Head Naval Memorial

Located at Bradleys Head, this historic site features the towering mast of HMAS Sydney I which saw action in Australia's first naval battle of World War I. The mast was saved when the ship was taken apart in 1928 and was set up at Bradleys Head in 1934. It stands about 17 m high and includes parts used for spotting enemy ships. It sits on top of stone fortifications built in the 1840s, which are also heritage protected. Take a stroll beyond the central monument along the Memorial Walk, a path lined with 23 plaques and commemorative tree plantings. Each plaque honours a Royal Australian Navy ship lost in conflict, offering a place for reflection and recognition of the dangers sailors faced and the bravery they showed at sea. Another interesting feature is a Doric column that once stood at the old Sydney General Post Office. It was moved to Bradleys Head in 1871 and marks one nautical mile from Fort Denison. Sailors once used it to test how fast their ships could travel. It's the only naval memorial in Australia where all Australian and foreign naval ships must perform a formal salute when passing.
