Mary MacKillop Place Museum

The Mary MacKillop Place Museum is a ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Since opening its doors in 1995, it has captivated visitors with the inspiring stories of Australia's first canonised saint Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop (1842–1909), and Fr Julian Tenison Woods (1832–1889) who together founded the Sisters. Housed in the previous 'Practice School' for novices, built in the early 1900s, the museum offers a unique glimpse into Australia's journey from the mid-colonial era to the pre-Federation period. Visitors can explore the rich history of this time, including the growth of the Catholic Church in Australia, and the challenges faced by the under privileged. The story unfolds across three galleries in addition to Alma Cottage, Mary's final home. The Mary MacKillop Place Museum boasts an impressive collection of objects and artifacts that preserve the remarkable historical legacy of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods. Alongside these items are personal belongings of the Sisters of Saint Joseph that tell the broader story of Catholicism in Australia. They also have a collection of items dating back to pre-colonial Australia, and European items from as early as the 17th century.

Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden

Everyone needs a secret garden in their life and you're invited to visit Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden, a public garden and much loved oasis in the heart of Sydney. Located a short walk over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or a closer stroll from Milsons Point and North Sydney train stations, the Secret Garden is a haven where you can explore meandering pathways discovering sculptures as you go; enjoy a picnic basket or read a book at one of the tables or benches beneath the garden's canopy; or you can simply enjoy the nature and serenity of your beautiful surrounds. You may even stumble across a hidden fairy house. Created over the past 20 years by artist Wendy Whiteley, wife and muse of Australian artist Brett Whiteley, the Secret Garden is nestled behind Luna Park in one of Sydney's most spectacular, and possibly smallest suburbs, Lavender Bay. Whilst the garden is free and open to the public seven days a week, there are steep inclines and a range of steps. Whilst visitors with limited mobility may only be able to access the uppermost sections of the garden via Clark Park, you are sure to enjoy to your visit.

Sub Base Platypus

Looking for things to do in North Sydney? Sub Base Platypus is an ideal setting for rest and recreation. Formerly a torpedo factory, submarine base and gasworks, Sub Base Platypus is a community recreation and work hub in North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal People. Featuring a shaded BBQ area with seating, a pocket playground and a scenic waterfront promenade, Sub Base Platypus is a place where visitors can relax on the waterfront with friends and family. Did you know? Despite its name, Sub Base Platypus isn't home to any platypuses! It's believed the Royal Australian Navy chose the name HMAS Platypus due to the similarities between the duck-billed monotreme and submarines. Platypuses use electro receptors in their bills to locate food underwater just as submarines use sonar to detect objects. In 2017, the Harbour Trust rechristened the site Sub Base Platypus. Landmarks and Buildings

Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia's most famous landmarks. Built in 1932, this incredible feat of engineering used almost 53,000 tonnes of steel to connect the Sydney CBD with the northern suburbs. Prior to its construction, Sydney residents hoping to cross the harbour would either have to board a ferry or undertake a 20-kilometre journey with five separate bridge crossings. Nowadays, pedestrians can walk from one side of Sydney Harbour to the other in just 15 minutes. Although its design was inspired by New York's Hell Gate Bridge, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is over 50 per cent larger than its American counterpart. In fact, standing 134 metres above the waters of Sydney Harbour, it remains the tallest steel arch bridge in the world today. Those up for an adventure should consider taking on the BridgeClimb; this 1.5–3.5 hour experience will reveal stunning views of Sydney from the top of the bridge. For a different perspective, jump on a ferry from Circular Quay to westerly destinations such as Luna Park, Cockatoo Island, or McMahons Point. Gliding directly beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge will give you an awe-inspiring sense of the magnitude—and the importance—of Sydney's iconic bridge.
