Natural Attractions

Seaforth Oval to Natural Bridge Track

Seaforth Oval to Natural Bridge track is a scenic walk that’s full of history, but that’s not all that’ll get your pulse racing. The descent into Bantry Bay via the Timber Getters track is difficult and steep. About halfway down it crosses the historic Old Bullock track, which was constructed in 1856 to haul sawn timber from sawmills in ‘The Big Forest’ owned by James Harris French (after whom Frenchs Forest was named) to the shores of Bantry Bay. At the end of the Timber Getters track, you’ll reach a rest area with toilets, once the site of the Bantry Bay ‘Pleasure Gardens' dance hall. From 1915 until 1973 however, it was part of the site of the Bantry Bay Explosives Magazine complex, which is what you’ll see today. The Bay track follows the line of the waterfront and eventually winds its way up to the base of ‘The Bluff’. The climb is tough going, however you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Middle Harbour when you reach the top.

Mary MacKillop Place Museum

The Mary MacKillop Place Museum is a ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Since opening its doors in 1995, it has captivated visitors with the inspiring stories of Australia's first canonised saint Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop (1842–1909), and Fr Julian Tenison Woods (1832–1889) who together founded the Sisters. Housed in the previous 'Practice School' for novices, built in the early 1900s, the museum offers a unique glimpse into Australia's journey from the mid-colonial era to the pre-Federation period. Visitors can explore the rich history of this time, including the growth of the Catholic Church in Australia, and the challenges faced by the under privileged. The story unfolds across three galleries in addition to Alma Cottage, Mary's final home. The Mary MacKillop Place Museum boasts an impressive collection of objects and artifacts that preserve the remarkable historical legacy of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods. Alongside these items are personal belongings of the Sisters of Saint Joseph that tell the broader story of Catholicism in Australia. They also have a collection of items dating back to pre-colonial Australia, and European items from as early as the 17th century.

Natural Bridge Track to Davidson Park

The Natural Bridge track is a half day walk linking the eastern and western foreshores of Bantry Bay. Look for the impressive crossing the track is named for, a natural sandstone bridge formed by erosion over thousands of years. The walk starts along The Bluff track at the end of Grattan Crescent before joining up with the Natural Bridge track. It’s a steep descent but the views down Bantry Bay are great. Then link up with the Currie Road trail, which crosses the Cook Street trail onto the Bates Creek track. The walk then drops steeply into Bates Creek crossing before zigzagging up to a flat section of the track. At the Tipperary Road turnoff, you’ll reach the start of the historic Magazine track. After a short descent that takes you past the Magazine complex, you’ll be rewarded with excellent views across Bantry Bay.
