Gum Swamp Wildlife Refuge

Gum Swamp Wildlife Refuge attracts a diverse variety of fauna and has long-been recognised as a nationally significant site for ornithology (bird watching). Due to Gum Swamp’s importance as waterbird and bird habitat, the site was promoted to Wildlife Refuge status in 1985. Four bird hides, located on the water’s edge, feature unobtrusive vantage points for avid and amateur twitchers to observe water and forest birds, both local and migratory. In addition to the extensive range of birds, 14 different mammals, 9 reptiles, 6 frogs, as well as the common bent-wing bat have been recorded in the area. Invasive carp and mosquito fish are also present in Gum Swamp. However, you don’t need to be a devote twitcher to appreciate the nature reserve. The site lends itself to a whole range of passive recreational opportunities including photography, art, as well as health and wellness pursuits. Located four kilometres south-west of Forbes. Turn off the Newell Highway (south) onto Warrul Road, then left onto Greens Road.

Amazing Sign

Amazing Sign

Imagine travelling along the stock route, discovering a massive word nestled amongst the dry golden grasses and majestic red river gums. A word that would get its feet wet in floods, say "G'day" to the passing cattle and drovers in the dry times and glisten in the frosty mornings on a sunny winter's day...that would be amazing! 'Amazing', spelt out in two and a half metre high red letters, was the first large-scale sculpture to be installed on the Sculpture Down the Lachlan trail. The letters are made from eight tonnes of steel, sub-framed with heavy plate and a three-millimetre powder-coated outer skin. 'Amazing' is a wonderful example of community enthusiasm and energy. This sculpture was designed by local artist Rosie Johnston, and fabricated and installed by local farmers, tradespeople and engineers who volunteered their time, in true country spirit. The Amazing Forbes NSW destination brand, adopted by Forbes Shire Council in 2017, is based off the iconic sculpture's typography and vibrant red colour.
