Orange Botanic Gardens

Orange Botanic Gardens is a naturally undulating 17-hectare site that features an impressive native and exotic plant collection. The Gardens were officially opened in 1988 for the Australian Bicentenary with plantings ranging from original native and exotic trees to newly developed displays. The Gardens are an ideal place in which to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery and district views. As well as being a popular site for bird watching, the Gardens provide numerous options for a family picnic or a relaxing stroll. The popular Country Walk offers all the pleasures of a varying landscape. The walk includes the original homestead garden, billabong, exotic and indigenous woodlands, a heritage orchard and rose garden, set below the country church and a sundial you can be part of! Located between the two billabongs is the Federation Arch, a stainless-steel sculpture designed by Bert Flugelman and donated to residents of Orange by the Orange Regional Arts Foundation. The Orange Botanic Gardens are open daily from early till dusk and admission is free. Playground and barbecue facilities are available nearby at the Orange Adventure Playground. Emmaville Cottage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Emmaville Cottage

Along with Banjo Paterson Park on Ophir Road, the Emmaville Cottage near the Botanic Gardens is a tangible link to the period more than 150 years ago when Patterson was born. The prefabricated cottage is believed to date from the 1850s. The American redwood panels were shipped from the United States and assembled to build large numbers of cottages in Australia. The four-room cottage is typical of early Australian vernacular architecture. The cottage was previously located at the Waratahs Sports Field, once part of the Narrambla Estate. The cottage is believed to be one of the last farm buildings from the Narrambla property. The Narrambla farming property was where the mother of Banjo Paterson came to stay before the birth of her son in 1864. The Emmaville Cottage is one of a number of key sites around Orange with connections to one of Australia's best-known poets, Banjo Patterson.

Banjo Paterson Memorial Park

This picturesque park marks the site of Banjo Paterson's birth on17 February 1864. At the time, the property "Narrambla" was owned by his aunt and uncle, Rose and John Templar. John Templar also operated a flour mill on this site from 1864 to 1869 - both the homestead and flour mill once stood within these grounds. A memorial to Australia's famous poet was unveiled here in 1947 and in 2003 a bust of Banjo was placed as part of the Centenary of Federation. It's an ideal stopover for lunch with lovely views, BBQs, picnic shelters, interpretive signage, toilets and plenty of off-street parking.
