Beetaloo Reservoir

Beetaloo Reservoir is located just to the east of Port Pirie in the southern Flinders Ranges and is part of the broad range of nature-based visitor destinations in the region. The reservoir precinct is now managed by the Department for Environment and Water and is open to the public for a range of recreational activities, including wildlife and birdwatching, picnicking and barbeques using the onsite facilities. Fishing, with an approved permit, is also possible with the reservoir stocked with Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Murray Cod. Fishing limits are detailed on PIRSA's website. Dogs are not permitted in the reservoir precinct. Assistance animals are accepted. Beetaloo reservoir is open to the public 24 hours a day from 1 May to 1 November. The reservoir is closed outside this period, and on Total Fire Ban Days and for operational activity (gates will be closed).

Historic Point Lowly Lighthouse

The Point Lowly Lighthouse has a rich history, serving as a crucial navigational aid for ships in an area that posed significant challenges to sailors. Erected in 1883 with a budget of 4,500 pounds, it was built after reports highlighted the dangers faced by ships navigating the region. The lighthouse was first lit on February 1, 1883, with Fred Franks and George Templemen serving as its first lightkeepers. The lighthouse originally stood at a height of 19.8 metres to the balcony and 22.8 metres to the centre of the light. To increase the range of its light, the structure was raised by 7.6 metres in 1902, extending its reach to 14 nautical miles. Over time, the lighthouse evolved. In 1973, it was converted to electrical operation and was unmanned shortly thereafter. By 1993, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority deactivated the light, deeming it unnecessary. However, the Whyalla City Council stepped in, securing financial assistance from the South Australian Government, purchasing the lighthouse, and reactivating the light later that year. The lighthouse keeper cottages still stand and have been preserved as accommodation for visitors, offering a chance to experience the historic site. The ongoing preservation of the lighthouse and its story highlights the significance of maritime safety and the evolving technology that has kept it operational through the years.

The Freycinet Trail extends 12 kilometres along the coastline of Fitzgerald Bay in the Upper Spencer Gulf. Beginning at the northern end of Fitzgerald Bay it follows the coastline to the southern tip of the bay at Point Lowly. The trail consisting of hiking, cycling and driving components and is sign posted with trail markers and interpretive signage. The Fitzgerald Bay hiking trail is four kilometres long offering a leisurely walk along dunes, pebble beaches and bushland. There are access roads to start of this hiking only trail. Trail is clearly defined and hikers are requested to stay on the trail. The remainder of the trail is suitable for hiking, cycling or driving. It follows the coastal emergency route with spectacular ocean views. Parking, camping and toilets are available at start of trail, car parking is also available at sectors seven and eight.

A February 2025 bushfire burnt about 25 percent of the park, yet it still offers plenty to explore and a rare chance to watch the landscape recover. Most affected areas have reopened; closures now only include Ali Lookout Walk and lookout platform and Alligator Lodge. Alligator Gorge, Mambray Creek, Willowie and Melrose entrances, all management tracks and the Mount Remarkable section of the Heysen Trail remain fully accessible.

Gulf and Ranges Trail

The Northern coastline is a diverse area containing some of the oldest landscapes on earth, and offers remarkable views of the Spencer Gulf, Flinders Ranges and Cultana Range. This hiking and cycling trail is 4km long loop including interpretive signage which explains the geology, geography, biology, zoology and human interaction. The Northern Spencer Landscape, as you see it today, was formed 90 to 60 million years ago. It separated from Antarctica 45 million years ago with all flora & fauna on it and moved north along with the rest of Australia like a huge Noah's Ark. The gulf changed its appearance intermittently from a dry valley to a sea environment throughout millennia.

The only circular jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, Whyalla's striking jetty is a standout feature along the city's picturesque foreshore. Hummock Hill Lookout

Overlooking the Spencer Gulf and City of Whyalla, the beach at the bottom of Hummock Hill was the site of the first European settlement in 1901. It is a significant Aboriginal place both mythological and as a camping ground. During World War Two it served as a gun battery and observation post. The 1980s development of the lookout utilised the old gun emplacements that can still be seen today. A one-way sealed road takes vehicles to the top of the hill. Hummock Hill is also a part of the City Walk Centenary Trail. City Walk Centenary Trail includes Hummock Hill lookout and all interpretive signs along the way.
