St Peter's Anglican Church

The Anglican Parish of St Peter at East Maitland is one of the oldest in Australia, commencing with the appointment of the Reverend George Rusden in 1834. Even in its unfinished state (the tower and spire have never been built), it remains one of the finest parish churches in New South Wales. The Foundation Stone was laid on 12 December 1884 by the newly appointed Primate of Australia, the Most Reverend Alfred Barry and the Church was dedicated for divine service by the Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Reverend JB Pearson on 29 September 1886. In style, the building is described as decorated gothic, 14th century work. The church contains a plethora of artistic and beautiful furnishings. The most striking are the pulpit, the font, the reredos, the lectern and the Henry Willis pipe organ. Additionally, there is a substantial amount of beautiful stained glass.

Les Darcy Statue

Born at 'Stradbroke' near Woodville, Les Darcy was one of Australia's greatest boxers. Brought up in poverty he defied the odds to hold the title of Australia's Heavyweight Champion and the World's Middleweight Champion before his early death at the age of 21. Somewhat of a folk hero, during his career his remarkable record in the ring, saw him win 40 out of 44 professional majors and was never knocked out. Through supporter's and friends' generosity, money was raised to engage an artist to design a lifelike monument to Les Darcy. The bronze statue was unveiled in August 2000 before a large crowd in King Edward Park. The boxing pose demonstrates Les Darcy's imposing physique and the strength he obviously had. Les Darcy's statue is located outside of East Maitland Bowling Club which hosts a permanent display to commemorate the astounding champion, including his own personal belongings. The statue also marks the first of eight historical sites of the Les Darcy Historical Walk, available from the Maitland Visitor Information Centre.

Glebe Cemetery

This Church of England burial ground is the oldest cemetery in the Hunter Valley and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The cemetery's earliest recorded burial is in 1828, although earlier unmarked graves are likely. The cemetery remained in use until the turn of the century and is the resting place of Maitland's renowned, soldiers, convicts, Protestants and Catholics. It is also suspected that famous architect Francis Greenway is buried in the cemetery. Glebe Cemetery is surrounded by an open green field, and visitors need to walk down a grassy slope and across a quaint wooden bridge to find the array of headstones. The adjacent quarry, established by 1835, provided stone for the first St Peter's Church, the Catholic Chapel, private dwellings and headstones for the cemetery.

Maitland Jewish Heritage Walk

Early colonial Maitland was a rough and tumble place, until it eventually grew into a commercial and trading hub. Respectability became etched on the buildings and the way of life. Successful merchants built impressive buildings and homes and they adopted lifestyles to match. Public buildings, places of worship, and schools became features of the city centre. The dominant language was English, the dominant religion was Christianity, and the dominant settlers were from Britain or of British origin. Into this milieu came individuals, families and groups from Jewish backgrounds. During this walk, you can visit 14 sites that provide a taste of the challenges, successes, trials, failures and complexities of their lives.
