Hunter Wine Theatre

Hunter Valley Resort offers the total 'wine experience' with the Hunter Wine Theatre for visitors to the Hunter Wine Country. The fun side of seeing a winery in action is when the grapes are being picked and put through the crusher at the winery - which for The Hunter Valley happens only in January and February. For the rest of the year action at the winery is generally pretty quiet. Not so with the Hunter Wine Theatre. The wine experience takes just over half an hour in a dedicated theatre. Up on the big screen, learn a little of the Hunter's wine heritage, Australia's oldest wine area. See the grapes being harvested, and being crushed at the on-site winery. After the show, up come the lights and it's down to the serious business of wine tasting. In front of each visitor is a bracket of the Hunter's best wines.

Hunter Valley Smash Room

Located at Sutton Estate in the Hunter Valley, we offer activities such as the Smash Room, Axe Throwing, the Wine Escape Room and the Chocolate Escape Room and electric bike hire. What is a Smash Room? Glad you asked. Hunter Valley Smash Room has two rooms available where you get suited up and go in, pick your weapon and smash wine bottles, plates, wine glasses and anything that is restaurant/ winery based. They see it as a positive release of tension and who doesn't need that now? It is a safe environment to get your anger out and walk away (without having to clean up) or take it out on anyone. Each smasher gets a crate of wine bottles included and extra items can be purchased. The wine bottles are donated from local wineries and repurposed to have an extra life before they are recycled, so they are fully doing their thing for the environment. Rothbury Riot Memorial

The memorial commemorates the miners who endured the mine owners lockout at Rothbury Mine in 1929. The Hunter Valley Rothbury mine near Cessnock was the site of an infamous lockout in 1929. Due to difficult economic times, the mine owners operating in the Northern coalfields decided to reduce miners’ wages. However, the Miners Federation did not agree to the terms and the mine owners subsequently closed down the Northern New South Wales mines. Eight months into the lockout the Rothbury mine was opened using scab or non-union labour which the union-miners opposed. A purported 10,000 protesters attempted to confront the scab miners but were hindered by police, called in to break them up. In the ensuing debacle, one miner, Norman Brown, was killed by police gunfire and many more were injured. The miners finally accepted the pay cut in May 1930 and returned to work. The lock-out and confrontation became known as the Battle for Rothbury.
