Luskintyre Bridge

Landmarks and Buildings

Luskintyre Bridge

The original Luskintyre Bridge was built in 1855, and subsequently destroyed by flood only two years later. It was not until November 1863 that the Hunter River crossing was again requested, and a public meeting was held at Mr Gready's Red Lion Inn, Lochinvar, to consider what steps should be taken to obtain a punt for the Hunter between Lochinvar and Luskintyre. In 1864, a site was chosen and work commenced on construction of the punt, which remained in service until 1893 when it was once again swept away by flood waters, the bulk of it deposited in the branches of trees. The current Luskintyre Bridge opened in 1904 and is one of only two surviving examples in New South Wales of an early steel Pratt truss bridge. At the time of completion, the Luskintyre steel trusses were the largest erected in the State, with the exception of those in the Hawkesbury Railway Bridge. In 2010 the Luskintyre Bridge was used as a set location during the filming of the movie Tomorrow When The War Began.

The Maitland Rail Museum has been formed to preserve, restore and display materials and records that interpret the part played by the South Maitland Railways in the settlement and transformation of the Maitland-Cessnock region to become one of the most important coal-producing areas in the world of the mid-20th century. The museum itself has a model railway, interpretive displays, as well as equipment, tools and other artefacts used by the railway. Entry to the museum is via gold coin donation.

St Mary's Anglican Church

Landmarks and Buildings

St Mary's Anglican Church

Maitland became a parish in 1838 and is one of the oldest parishes in the Diocese of Newcastle. The first St Mary's Church was designed by James Hume and situated between the present Church and the Rectory. Completed in 1843, with a seating capacity of 300-400 persons, it was designed to be functional rather than architecturally attractive. With a growing population, the question arose about enlarging the Church Building. The Colonial Architect, Edmund Blackett, said that it was too costly to enlarge and repair and so proposed a new building to seat 700 people and built on an ecclesiastical plan that would look like a house of God. The foundation stone was laid in 1860 but the bell tower was not completed until 1887.
