Henry Lawson Centre

Your trip to this part of Henry Lawson's country would be incomplete without a visit to the Henry Lawson Centre. This beautifully curated collection is a repository of material related to the life and times of Henry Lawson. There are paintings, prints, books, photos and cuttings, relating not only to the author but also to many parts of the region to which he vividly refers in his stories and poems. The collection, proudly preserved by the Henry Lawson Society, is the largest collection outside the Mitchell Library's Sydney collection. The centre is a must-visit for literary lovers and historians alike. You can even see the flour bin which was made by Henry's father and referred to in the poem, 'The flour bin' – 'on a dreary old selection, where times were dry and thin, in a slab and shingle kitchen, there stood a flour bin'. Don't miss the memorial statue of Henry Lawson which stands proudly in the park between Medley and Herbert Streets in Gulgong. The Henry Lawson Society of NSW proudly delivers the Gulgong Henry Lawson Heritage Festival each June long weekend with the support of dedicated volunteers, community groups, local businesses and sponsors. Cherry Picking at Roth Family Orchard Mudgee

Sweet, juicy, delicious, premium cherries straight from the tree! This family farm is open during cherry season (December) for visitors to enjoy the orchard and pick delicious cherries. The timing of cherry season will depend on weather conditions which influence fruit ripening. The 2025 season is expected to open around 5 December, with more fruit starting to ripen a week later. For a great fun morning out with family or friends visit the orchard to pick your own cherries, or buy them ready picked from the farm gate. The flavour direct from this Mudgee orchard is amazing. Cherries are very seasonal and their ripening times can vary depending on the weather and the cherry variety. Trees are pruned short to make picking easy and fun for children and adults. Cherries are best picked early morning as they stay fresh longer when picked while still cool - and it's more fun for the pickers too! Bring an esky, bags/boxes and ice to keep your cherries cold on the way home. For safety, good walking shoes are advisable when visiting the farm. Bookings are recommended and maybe essential at peak times on weekends. The orchard opens mornings only, usually Thursday - Tuesday but it depends on cherries. Check dates on the booking system before you come.

Gulgong Gold Experience

Gulgong Gold Experience is located on the exact location of the first gold found in Gulgong in 1870. The Gulgong Gold Experience has been excavated into the slopes of Red Hill and incorporates the original commissioned tile mural that was erected in 1988 depicting the gold leads of the Gulgong. This interesting building serves as the information hub for the facility and houses detailed audio and visual displays of Gulgong's gold history. On entry, visitors are given an insight into life on the gold fields with the enlarged Holtermann photograph of a puddling scene, along with an original dray. The underground theme is carried on through the replica underground mining tunnel, which is tunnelled into the back wall with interesting features to explore and stories to be told. Once above ground, the examples of quartz rock, the view down the original mine shaft and the tranquil view over Red Hill form part of the Gulgong Gold Experience. For those who are a little more adventurous, gold panning is available. Gravel from local gold-bearing creeks is brought in regularly, and panning equipment is free to ticketed visitors.

Gulgong Symbol Trail

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Gulgong Symbol Trail

During the Great Depression and in gold rush times, people travelling country roads in search of work, food or just a place to sleep the night, used a secret code of symbols to communicate the 'lie of the land' to fellow travellers. This secret language was used internationally - by the tramps and gypsies of Europe to the hobos of America and the swaggies of Australia. Chester Nealie, a local identity and well-known Gulgong potter came up with a creative concept for decorative paving in Gulgong when approached by the council. The symbols, of which Chester chose 16 from a possible 50 or so, were deemed appropriate for Gulgong's gold rush and 'battler' past. The Gulgong Symbol Trail comprises around 70 tiles, placed in a random 'swaggering' pattern throughout Mayne Street and Coronation Park. See if you can find the tiles as you wander the streets of Gulgong.
