This sweeping stretch of sand is half an hour from Perth and just a few minutes south of the thriving port city of Fremantle. With almost almost 4 kilometres of stunning, turquoise-fringed coastline, Coogee Beach provides the perfect playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Explore the walking trails and historic jetty of Woodman Point, then grab a pair of flippers and soak up the unforgettable sights below the water’s surface. Located about 25 metres from the shore, the trail offers an unparalleled opportunity to get up close to the atmospheric remains of the shipwrecked Omeo, which sank in 1905, as well as other relics that speak of the area’s rich seafaring history. You’ll also pass sculptures and art installations, and come face to face with the area’s abundant marine life – including inquisitive stingrays, seals and dolphins. Cappuccino Strip

The section of South Terrace from the corner of Bannister Street to Parry Street in Fremantle is renowned as the Cappuccino Strip, where Nunzio Gumina applied for (and got) the city's very first al fresco dining license in 1977 for Old Papa's café (now Grill'd). The Cappuccino Strip is Fremantle's action-packed centre. Here buskers, street performers, and heritage-listed stall holders are every bit as revered as the award-winning restaurants and charming small bars that line the street. It is the home of alfresco dining in Western Australia, and the street is lined with restaurants, pubs and breweries including the famous Sail and Anchor which launched Australia's first contemporary craft brewery, Matilda Bay Brewing Company, and transformed the Australian beer landscape for good. The Cappuccino Strip is also home to a range of shops covering everything from fashion to souvenirs. Don't forget to wander through PIAZZA Fremantle, a newly established artist precinct featuring art, workshops, independent stores and culinary delights. At the northern end of the strip is the historic Fremantle Markets featuring more than 150 stalls. Dating back to 1897 and still housed in one of only two surviving municipal market buildings in WA, the market is considered a must for locals and tourists alike. The Cappuccino Strip is a five-minute walk from Fremantle Train station.

Samson House at Walyalup on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country

This impressive home was built in 1888 for Michael Samson, who, after a life of adventure – and often misadventure! – went on to become an active member of local Fremantle politics and, ultimately, Mayor of Fremantle from 1905 to 1907. Michael was the son of Lionel Samson, who arrived in Western Australia aboard the Calista in 1829 with his brother, William. This earlier generation of Samson brothers established a liquor import-export that continues today. The young architect Michael commissioned to design Samson House, JJ Talbot Hobbs, also designed the Western Australian War Memorial in King's Park. Hobbs was later knighted in acknowledgement of his contributions to architecture and his designs are well-known landmarks, including this house, which is a rare and fine example of his early work in Western Australia. Samson House at Walyalup is located in Walyalup (Fremantle). Volunteers open the house the first Sunday and third Wednesday of every month. Refer to our website for opening hours.

Walyalup Koort

The heart of Fremantle in the square originally imagined in 1833 by John Septimus Roe and where the wide blue Western Australian skies meet the architecture of a spirited 19th-century gold rush port city, where avenues of Jacaranda trees line the streets and Moreton Bay figs and plane trees create a canopy for an urban room in the heart of the downtown area. This is Walyalup Koort. Fremantle Town Hall stands tall in the square with a 32-metre clocktower and picturesque roofscape of turrets in the Victorian Free Classical style. Fremantle Visitor Centre in Walyalup Civic Centre is a natural point zero to begin exploring the city. Explore FOMO, pull up a stool for a counter meal and a cold beer at the ‘Fed’, a traditional Australian pub, and browse independent retail stores found in the beautifully restored Manning Buildings that extend over a city block along William Street through to Market and High Streets. There are no modern skyscrapers in sight in Fremantle’s town square, it’s a place of a human scale where friends gather, city workers emerge and children play. Walyalup Koort is a five-minute walk from Fremantle Bus and Train Station. Visit the Fremantle Visitor Centre for local information and tips on things to do while you are in Fremantle.
