His Majesty's Theatre - December 2023

Entertainment Venues

His Majesty's Theatre

His Majesty's Theatre opened on Christmas Eve, 1904 and in 2024 celebrated its 120th anniversary! The Edwardian era architecture is amazing - tours are available and a great way to learn about the history or see behind the scenes! This is a working theatre, so check out what's on and catch a show! A variety of genres are offered, including comedy, music, dance, opera, musicals, and theatre. The theatre takes pride in being the home of the West Australian Opera and West Australian Ballet companies, offering the community world-class productions that enrich the city's cultural tapestry. In 2021, a project commenced to reinstate the original façade of His Majesty's, restoring the splendour of the balconies on the Dress Circle and Upper Circle levels. This labour of love spanned two years, culminating in the theatre's restoration to its former grandeur by 2023. The importance of His Majesty's Theatre to the cultural fabric of Western Australia is reflected in its inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places and the Register of the National Estate. It has been named a "State Heritage Icon", and is believed to be the only remaining working Edwardian theatre in Australia. Located in the Perth centre, His Majesty's Theatre is easily accessible by public transport, with plenty of parking available. There are many great restaurants to dine at before catching a show!

Feather Arbour by Ned Khan

A dynamic, shifting artwork by internationally-renowned American artist Ned Kahn, this public artwork is located outside of Brookfield Place, in the heart of Perth's bustling Central Business District. The artwork was briefed, developed and managed by Public Arts organisation FORM. This installation called for a piece which responded to the themes of light, discovery and memory – as well as taking into account the environmental conditions of the site. Kahn’s response to this was to create Feather Arbour, a work evocative of feathers and fish fins, subtly referencing the nearby Swan River ecosystem. Like most of Kahn’s installations, the work is a combination of science, art and technology, replicating the forms and forces of nature, reflecting the unseen movement of wind. Ned Kahn is famous for his museum exhibits built for the Exploratorium in San Francisco. He has won a United States National Design Award for environmental design and collaborated with Koning Eizenberg Architecture Incorporated on a piece for the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. The work is a series of nine, six-metre tall ‘feathers’, constructed from stainless steel and sprung steel.

Nine Streams in the Borna Malliji

Nine Streams in the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadows)

The Nine Streams in the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadow) takes the form of a projected shadow on the west wall of the Foundation Place and is located only metres from the actual site where the felling of a tree marked the European foundation of Perth on 12 August 1829. The artwork is in effect a digital extension of the real shadow of the newly planted Jacaranda tree and uses digital animation to transform the west wall into a theatre of shadows. History appears out of the shadows, revealing some of the significant future history of the State Buildings. Although the artwork is orientated toward subjects of the past, the living spirit of the city portrayed points to a bright future. The artwork carries a strong statement for reconciliation. Given the Cathedral Square precinct was a site of conflict between the Noongar people and the early Settlers and that the site has been continuously connected to Government activities, it seemed an appropriate place to acknowledge Indigenous and Non-Indigenous relations here. Accordingly, a close working relationship between the artist and Wadjuk local Barry McGuire was established very early on in the making of the work.
