Iconic

Standing at the entrance to the Mirvac office tower, this striking sculpture marks a defining moment in Perth's history—the felling of a tree in 1829 to commemorate the city's founding. More than just a landmark, it serves as a powerful symbol of renewal, cultural identity, and continuity. Crafted from interwoven stainless steel tubes, the sculpture rises in a form inspired by ancient tree trunks. Its modern design reflects the enduring strength and interconnectedness of community, nature, and heritage. The tree form, with its elegant buttressed lines, honours both the past and the regenerative cycles shaping the city's future. At pavement level, the sculpture splits into three branches, encircling a stone marking the precise site of the original tree. This base includes an engraved "end grain" detail—an artistic reference to the foundation tree's cut surface—offering a tactile, symbolic connection to the land and its layered history. Located in the heart of the city, the Foundation Tree sculpture is more than a piece of public art; it's a place of reflection, a cultural waypoint, and a reminder of Perth's beginnings and its ongoing transformation.

Onward!Onward!

Immerse yourself in Western Australia's shared cultural history at Onward! Onward!, a compelling, site-specific public art installation located in the heart of Perth's Cathedral Square. Created by renowned local artist Marcus Canning, this thought-provoking piece invites visitors to look down and connect deeply with the land's First Peoples. The artwork features 256 granite pavers seamlessly integrated into the public plaza. Each paver is intricately etched with English and Noongar words and phrases, gently encouraging reflection, conversation, and cultural awareness as you stroll through the precinct. Canning, whose own family heritage includes his great-great-uncle and famed WA surveyor Alfred Canning, designed the piece to playfully yet profoundly contrast colonial mapping with enduring Indigenous language. It stands as a subtle, powerful celebration of cultural resilience. Centrally located between St Georges Terrace and Hay Street, this open-air exhibition is completely free to access and open 24/7. It serves as a perfect cultural stop during a walking tour of the Perth CBD.

Nine Streams in the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadows)

The Nine Streams in the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadow) takes the form of a projected shadow on the west wall of the Foundation Place and is located only metres from the actual site where the felling of a tree marked the European foundation of Perth on 12 August 1829. The artwork is in effect a digital extension of the real shadow of the newly planted Jacaranda tree and uses digital animation to transform the west wall into a theatre of shadows. History appears out of the shadows, revealing some of the significant future history of the State Buildings. Although the artwork is orientated toward subjects of the past, the living spirit of the city portrayed points to a bright future. The artwork carries a strong statement for reconciliation. Given the Cathedral Square precinct was a site of conflict between the Noongar people and the early Settlers and that the site has been continuously connected to Government activities, it seemed an appropriate place to acknowledge Indigenous and Non-Indigenous relations here. Accordingly, a close working relationship between the artist and Wadjuk local Barry McGuire was established very early on in the making of the work.
