Mount Lawley Heritage Walk

Discover the charm and character of one of Perth's most iconic suburbs with the Mount Lawley Heritage Walk. Located just 4km north of Perth's CBD, Mount Lawley is renowned for its leafy streets, vibrant café culture, and rich architectural history. This self-guided walk spans approximately 1km along Beaufort Street, beginning or ending at the historic Astor Theatre, a beloved entertainment venue dating back to 1914. The walk features 10 newly installed bronze plaques and several established markers that tell the stories of Mount Lawley's evolution since the 1830s. From Federation and Queen Anne homes to Art Deco landmarks and Colonial-era buildings, each site reveals the suburb's transformation through the lives of notable residents, community institutions, and architectural milestones. Whether you're a history enthusiast or a casual explorer, the walk offers a unique glimpse into Perth's heritage. Highlights include the former tram terminus, Rosetta Lodge, Perth College Chapel, and the Commonwealth Bank building. The route is flat and easy to navigate, making it ideal for all ages. Created in partnership with the Mount Lawley Society and the City of Stirling, the walk celebrates local identity and preservation. After your stroll, enjoy a coffee or meal at one of the many cafés lining Beaufort Street. Brochures are available at Inglewood Library and Mt Flora Museum, or visit the website for more information.

Hyde Park

Just minutes north of Perth's CBD in the suburb of Highgate, Hyde Park is one of the city's most picturesque and popular green spaces. Rich in natural beauty and cultural significance, it is also a registered Aboriginal site. Its twin lakes, sprawling lawns, and mature trees create a perfect setting for picnics, casual walks, bike rides, and outdoor celebrations. The park is also a sought-after venue for weddings and local events. Visitors will find a wide range of facilities including a children's playground, seasonal water playground, public toilets, fitness equipment, shaded gazebos, barbeques, drinking fountains, and accessible walking paths. Whether you're enjoying the natural surrounds, exploring its cultural roots, or simply taking time to relax under the trees, Hyde Park is a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike—blending nature, heritage, and recreation in one beautiful city park.

Aboriginal Art Centre Hub

Aboriginal art centres are exciting places for travellers to visit and experience the energy of Aboriginal creativity and culture. The Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of WA (AACHWA) represents 24 Aboriginal art centres, encompassing 5,000 artists and 90 different language groups, scattered across the state from the Kimberley all the way into the Central Desert. Each art centre is unique in its own way, but they all offer visitors a rare opportunity to meet Aboriginal artists in regional and remote communities, watch them work in their studios, listen to their stories, and buy authentic Aboriginal art. Unlike commercial galleries, most art centres are not-for-profit, Aboriginal-owned organisations and proceeds made from art sales go directly towards benefiting artists and their communities. Visiting Aboriginal art centres is a great way to travel the state, connect with Aboriginal culture and witness first-hand the experience, knowledge and skills that goes into creating authentic Aboriginal artwork.

Iconic

Standing at the entrance to the Mirvac office tower, this striking sculpture marks a defining moment in Perth's history—the felling of a tree in 1829 to commemorate the city's founding. More than just a landmark, it serves as a powerful symbol of renewal, cultural identity, and continuity. Crafted from interwoven stainless steel tubes, the sculpture rises in a form inspired by ancient tree trunks. Its modern design reflects the enduring strength and interconnectedness of community, nature, and heritage. The tree form, with its elegant buttressed lines, honours both the past and the regenerative cycles shaping the city's future. At pavement level, the sculpture splits into three branches, encircling a stone marking the precise site of the original tree. This base includes an engraved "end grain" detail—an artistic reference to the foundation tree's cut surface—offering a tactile, symbolic connection to the land and its layered history. Located in the heart of the city, the Foundation Tree sculpture is more than a piece of public art; it's a place of reflection, a cultural waypoint, and a reminder of Perth's beginnings and its ongoing transformation.

Onward!Onward!

Immerse yourself in Western Australia's shared cultural history at Onward! Onward!, a compelling, site-specific public art installation located in the heart of Perth's Cathedral Square. Created by renowned local artist Marcus Canning, this thought-provoking piece invites visitors to look down and connect deeply with the land's First Peoples. The artwork features 256 granite pavers seamlessly integrated into the public plaza. Each paver is intricately etched with English and Noongar words and phrases, gently encouraging reflection, conversation, and cultural awareness as you stroll through the precinct. Canning, whose own family heritage includes his great-great-uncle and famed WA surveyor Alfred Canning, designed the piece to playfully yet profoundly contrast colonial mapping with enduring Indigenous language. It stands as a subtle, powerful celebration of cultural resilience. Centrally located between St Georges Terrace and Hay Street, this open-air exhibition is completely free to access and open 24/7.
