Cradock War Memorial

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Cradock War Memorial

The recently completed Cradock Memorial Garden Shelter now houses two picnic table settings and two wartime information plaques setting out Australia’s commitment during both World Wars. The Shelter provides attendees, especially ageing community members and veterans from periods gone bye, respite from the extremes of weather and fatigue given the nature of events such as Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, Australia Day and such social events which occur from time to time. The Cradock War Memorial and Memorial Garden are situated on the RM Williams Way, on the main tourist route between the Flinders Ranges and the wines regions of the Barossa and Clare Valley. These tourism venues attract an estimated 60,000 travellers annually. With sheltered 'picnic' facilities now established in the Cradock Memorial Garden, travellers through the area will now be given cause to pause and enjoy the experiences the Cradock Heritage Trail now provide.

Fred Teague's Museum

Situated at Hawker Motors is a museum, which Fred Teague built up over the years with relics from early settlers. There is a fine display of gemstones, minerals, fossils, photographs, antique bottles and memorabilia. For 60 years or so, Fred had been an inveterate collector. It all began with some mineral specimens, which he discovered in the Flinders Ranges. The compact museum, which is open to visitors, is packed with geological and mineral specimens ranging from beryl and bornite to exquisite scholzite crystals from Reaphook Hill. There is a wide range of regional items from a pedal radio to a camel's shoe. A number of pieces come from the now-deserted town of Waukaringa.

Castle Rock Walk and Lookout

This is the prominent rock formation located about two kilometers to the east of Hawker. As can be seen in the photos of this listing, late afternoon light provides an excellent photo, and it looks like a castle hence the name by which it has been known locally for decades. The access to Castle Rock is via the original road to Wilpena Pound, travel out of Hawker for about 1km along the Wilpena road and turn right onto the unsealed road marked with the sign Desalination Plant. Avoid Yednalue Drive road because this road can become impassable during and after rain and can also have some stoney sections. A number of visitors have required towing when they have used this road. Proceed on the dirt road to the top of the hill. The entrance is through the gate in the fence and follows the walking track, which leads towards Castle Rock. A great place to take in the view and for a photo in the early morning or evening for the best colour and light.

The Kanyaka Station ruins consist of two main historical sites. The first is the woolshed which was one of the largest in the state and provided room for 24 blade shearers who shore thousands of sheep in fairly confined shearing floors. The main building is the homestead which housed the manager, his family and servants. Some of the original stone wall which protected the gardens is still visible. The Great Northern Railway also ran parallel to Kanyaka Station; the raised roadbed of the old narrow gauge railway can still be seen today.
